Job description
A well-established Boston-based institutional asset manager is seeking a Director, Investment Risk to lead the continued development of a centralized investment risk function supporting its Equity and Fixed Income investment platforms.
This is a highly visible, hands‑on role for an experienced investment risk professional who wants the opportunity to shape a firm‑wide risk framework rather than simply inherit an established program. Working closely with portfolio managers, investment leadership, Product, Legal & Compliance, Technology, and senior management, the Director will enhance the firm’s approach to portfolio risk measurement, analytics, governance, reporting, and oversight.
The successful candidate will serve as the firm’s lead investment risk professional, bringing together existing expertise across the investment organization while introducing greater consistency, transparency, and scalability to the firm’s risk practices.
This role offers a compelling combination of strategic ownership and hands‑on analytical work , with significant exposure to senior investment professionals and the opportunity to influence how investment risk is managed across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the continued development of the firm’s investment risk framework, including governance, risk guidelines, reporting standards, escalation protocols, and oversight processes
Monitor and evaluate portfolio, strategy, and product‑level risks across Equity and Fixed Income strategies, identifying trends, concentrations, outliers, and emerging risks
Conduct portfolio risk analysis, including risk attribution, benchmark‑relative analysis, factor exposures, scenario analysis, stress testing, and related quantitative assessments
Partner directly with portfolio managers and investment teams to understand portfolio construction and key risk drivers while providing independent review and constructive challenge
Work hands‑on with investment risk and analytics platforms such as FactSet, Axioma, Bloomberg , and comparable systems
Enhance Fixed Income risk analytics, infrastructure, and reporting capabilities in partnership with investment teams and Technology
Develop risk dashboards, recurring reporting, and analytical materials for investment teams, senior leadership, and governance committees
Play a meaningful role in investment and product governance forums and help establish a more formalized firm‑wide investment risk governance structure over time
Partner with Legal & Compliance, Technology, Data, and other business functions to strengthen risk data, reporting infrastructure, historical analysis, and escalation processes
Support client, consultant, and internal due diligence relating to portfolio risk, investment processes, and the firm’s risk management framework
Evaluate new tools, methodologies, and processes that can improve the firm’s investment risk capabilities as the function continues to evolve
Candidate Profile
The firm is seeking a senior investment risk professional who combines strong technical expertise with the judgment and communication skills to operate effectively alongside experienced investment professionals.
Ideal candidates will bring:
8+ years of experience in investment risk management, portfolio analytics, or a closely related investment oversight function, preferably within institutional asset management
Meaningful experience building, formalizing, or enhancing an investment risk program or operating framework
Strong hands‑on Fixed Income risk expertise, including portfolio analytics, reporting, systems, and risk processes
Experience across both Fixed Income and Equity strategies strongly preferred
Deep understanding of portfolio construction and investment risk concepts, including tracking error, factor exposures, scenario analysis, stress testing, VaR, duration, convexity, spread risk, and liquidity risk
Experience with investment analytics and risk platforms such as Bloomberg, FactSet, Axioma, or similar tools
Familiarity with taxable and/or municipal Fixed Income strategies is highly desirable
Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem‑solving capabilities
The ability to translate complex investment risk concepts into clear, commercially relevant insights for portfolio managers, senior leadership, clients, and other stakeholders
A hands‑on, entrepreneurial approach and comfort operating in an environment where tools, processes, and reporting standards continue to evolve
Strong relationship‑building and influencing skills, with the confidence to provide independent challenge while maintaining credibility with investment professionals
Experience supporting investment committees, risk governance forums, client due diligence, or consultant requests is a plus
A bachelor's degree is required. CFA designation is preferred; FRM certification is a plus.
Location & Compensation
This position is based in Boston and follows a hybrid schedule of four days in the office and one day remote.
Base salary: $175,000–$225,000 , depending on experience and qualifications, plus eligibility for discretionary incentive compensation.
