We're looking for a Director of Accounting who wants to help with both.

This is a hands-on, in-office role in Scottsdale, AZ. You'll lead the accounting function, work closely with ownership and teammates, and help shape the processes and insights that support our next chapter. In a company our size, good ideas can make an immediate and visible difference.
You'll help the team understand how the business is performing, spot risks early, find opportunities to improve, and turn financial information into actionable decisions. We value someone who asks the right questions, takes initiative, and enjoys seeing an idea become a better way of working.
The right candidate will bring experience from construction, homebuilding, or a closely related industry, along with sound judgment, high integrity, attention to detail, and the ability to explain financial information in a clear and practical way.
Responsibilities Your responsibilities will include:
● Own the accounting function and help it grow with the company
● Build better ways of working through clearer processes, sharper reporting, and reliable controls that support long-term growth
● Lead and improve visibility into job costing, project forecasting, annual company budgeting and forecasting, budget performance, cash flow, gross margin, and profitability across the business
● Deliver timely financial reporting and analysis that helps the company understand performance, risks, opportunities, and trends
● Support decision-making around pricing, budget allocation, operational performance, and company profitability
● Analyze the performance of different parts of the business and help identify opportunities for improvement
● Help trade paper-heavy processes for practical digital tools and workflows the team can actually use
● Ensure the integrity and timely execution of core accounting functions, including general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, cash management, reporting packages, and sales tax
● Support selected operational and administrative functions that naturally sit within a small-company accounting role, including items such as insurance coordination and related financial oversight
● Work with teammates across the company so financial information reflects what is happening in the day-to-day business
● Serve as a key point of contact for banks, CPAs, and other outside financial partners, including coordination of tax reporting, tax return preparation, and related compliance requirements
● Maintain financial discipline, confidentiality, internal controls, and accuracy in all work
● Manage and delegate effectively within a small accounting department, including oversight of one direct report and day-to-day accounting support functions
Qualifications The right candidate will likely bring:
● Accounting and finance experience in construction, homebuilding, or a closely related industry
● Solid understanding of the financial realities of residential construction, with custom homebuilding experience preferred
● Experience with job costing, project forecasting, gross margin management, cash flow oversight, profitability analysis, and budget review
● Working knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and applicable accounting and tax compliance requirements
● Ability to think globally about the company while also handling day-to-day financial work
● High integrity, sound judgment, and close attention to detail
● Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly, simply, and confidently
● Comfort with systems, organization, and process improvement
● Proficiency with accounting systems and financial reporting tools, including advanced spreadsheet skills, with the ability to learn, improve, and administer digital accounting tools, systems, and workflows
● Ability to manage one direct report, delegate effectively, and keep the accounting function moving efficiently
Education and Experience ● 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience preferred
● Prior experience in a controller, senior accountant, construction accountant, or similar role preferred
● Experience in residential construction, luxury custom homebuilding, or a comparable construction-related business preferred
● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is a plus
● CPA or other advanced accounting credentials are a plus, but not required
