Job description
Director of Construction
Location: Rio Grande Valley, TX (relocation required)
Reports To: Division President
Compensation: base + bonus (tied to division performance, cycle time, and customer satisfaction survey results) + relocation package
About the Opportunity
A fast-growing production homebuilder is expanding rapidly in the Rio Grande Valley, one of the fastest-growing markets in the country, driven in part by major growth catalysts like the nearby SpaceX Starbase. With 2,000+ lots in the pipeline and a goal of scaling from ~220–240 closings/year to 500+ annually, the division is investing heavily in building out its construction leadership team — and this role is central to that growth.
The Role
The Director of Construction will take ownership of field construction operations for the division, leading and developing a team of 6 Construction Managers and 2 Assistant Construction Managers, with support from an Area Construction Manager. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who wants to build a team from the ground up — most current CMs have less than 2 years in homebuilding, so a major focus of this role is training, mentoring, and retaining talent while raising the overall depth of experience on the team.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, train, and develop a team of Construction Managers and Assistant Construction Managers to support rapid production growth
Personally interview and select construction management hires, ensuring the right long-term fit rather than simply filling seats
Oversee production home construction from start to finish, managing cycle times, quality, and cost control
Manage soil conditions/PER values and other site-specific construction considerations unique to the Rio Grande Valley market
Drive cost savings across production home construction without compromising the "what you see is what you get" build standard (3 standard elevations)
Own construction performance metrics: cycle time, customer satisfaction survey scores, and overall division performance
Partner closely with warranty and HOA teams to ensure a smooth homeowner experience post-closing
Provide regular, consistent communication and reporting (weekly updates) to division leadership
Help scale the division from current volume toward a 500+ closings/year target
Ideal Candidate Profile
5–8+ years of experience in production homebuilding
Proven track record with a production homebuilder closing 200–300+ units/year
Experience managing warranty and HOA functions
Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and retain a construction team
Career-driven — someone looking for a multi-year growth opportunity (potential path to VP of Operations), not a short-term stop
Willing to relocate fully and commit 100% to the market — this is not a role that works as a remote or partial-commitment position
Comfortable wearing multiple hats in a fast-scaling environment
Why This Role
Significant growth potential — both personally (path to VP of Operations) and for the division itself
Backed by a company that's actively investing in its people rather than promoting from a thin bench
Located in a high-growth market with strong lifestyle appeal: beaches, fishing, family-friendly environment, and major regional economic momentum
Full relocation package provided
