Job description

Southern California | $150,000–$190,000 base salary

Porto’s Bakery is seeking a Director of Facilities and Maintenance to build and lead our facilities function across our Southern California locations. Our facilities combine high-volume retail operations with substantial food production. We need a leader who can plan ahead, respond effectively to urgent issues, and build programs that support reliable operations and continued growth.

In this role, you will be responsible for the condition and reliability of our facilities, the maintenance programs and standards that support them, and the team and vendor partners who carry out the work. You will partner closely with bakery leadership to address facility needs and complete improvements while minimizing disruption to daily operations.

Key Responsibilities

Build and lead a preventive maintenance program covering major building systems, commercial refrigeration, production equipment, and other facility assets. Verify that scheduled work is completed to standard.

Establish asset records, maintenance schedules, service histories, and replacement plans to reduce recurring repairs and support long-term planning.

Oversee repairs and urgent facility issues across locations, setting clear expectations for response times, resolution, and follow-up.

Lead remodels and facility improvement projects from planning and contractor selection through completion. Coordinate project schedules with bakery leadership, particularly when work affects active operations.

Develop and manage facilities budgets, monitor spending by location and category, and identify future capital needs.

Select and manage vendors across multiple trades, including contracts, service quality, response times, and costs.

Use the work order system to track maintenance activity, identify recurring issues, and report on spending, backlog, asset condition, and project progress.

Coordinate facility-related permits, inspections, and corrective work with Operations and other appropriate teams.

Lead and develop the facilities team. Create practical maintenance standards and guidance that help bakery leaders identify and report issues early.

Develop response plans for major facility failures, including refrigeration, power, and water disruptions, and coordinate with bakery leadership to restore operations safely and quickly.

Qualifications and Experience

7+ years of facilities or maintenance experience, including 5+ years leading a multi-location function.

Experience supporting large, high-volume restaurant, grocery, food production, or comparable facilities.

Demonstrated success building preventive maintenance programs and managing budgets, vendors, and capital or remodel projects.

Working knowledge of HVAC, commercial refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, and other major building systems.

Ability to set priorities across multiple locations, lead through urgent issues, and communicate clearly with operational and executive teams.

Hands-on trade experience, a relevant degree or professional certification, OSHA 30, and Spanish fluency are preferred.

Work Environment:

This role involves regular travel among our Southern California locations to assess facility conditions and inspect completed work, including in rooftop equipment areas and confined spaces. Site visits may involve walking, standing, using stairs or ladders, and occasional bending or kneeling. The role may involve hot, cold, wet, or noisy environments and requires availability to respond to urgent facility issues outside regular business hours. Access to rooftops and confined spaces must follow applicable safety procedures. The essential functions of this position may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Compensation and Benefits:

The base salary range is $150,000–$190,000, based on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage; a 401(k) with company match; paid time off and holidays; and a team member discount.
