Job Summary:

The Director of Finance is the senior accounting and finance leader for Mulhaupts and is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of the company's financial operations. The role leads the Accounting and Finance team and owns core accounting responsibilities including financial reporting, month-end close, cash management, accounts receivable and payable, internal controls, and compliance. In addition to maintaining a strong accounting foundation, the Director of Finance partners with Mulhaupts’ fractional CFO and executive and departmental leadership to improve management reporting, financial planning, operational analysis, and the use of technology and data throughout the business. The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of Mulhaupts' project, service, distribution, and recurring-revenue activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Lead, coach, and develop the Accounting and Finance team by setting clear expectations, delegating effectively, providing feedback, and fostering professional growth.

Oversee team performance, workload, communication, and development while maintaining appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties.

Partner with Human Resources on recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and developing accounting and finance talent.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Lead the monthly and year-end close processes and ensure timely, accurate, and complete financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and balance sheet through appropriate reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, reserves, and review procedures.

Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, collections, cash receipts, vendor payments, payroll-related accounting, credit card activity, and expense reimbursements.

Manage cash flow and working capital, including daily cash visibility, banking relationships, line-of-credit activity, debt payments, and opportunities to reduce interest expense.

Coordinate annual financial, tax, insurance, and other required audits and reporting with external auditors, CPAs, financial institutions, and government agencies while maintaining effective internal controls over cash, purchasing, disbursements, system access, and financial reporting.

Lead the annual budgeting process and develop reliable forecasts, cash projections, and financial models in partnership with executive leadership and department leaders.

Provide timely reporting and analysis, including but not limited to department performance, job and project profitability, margins, backlog and work-in-process trends to help leadership understand not only what happened, but why it happened, what it means, and what actions should be considered.

Partner with departments to understand financial and operational drivers, including job costing, work in process, project billing, revenue recognition, and inventory, and identify opportunities to improve profitability, cash flow, and business performance.

Own and improve the use of Mulhaupts' ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and related financial systems; streamline or automate manual processes to strengthen data integrity, reporting, workflow efficiency, and system controls.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, professional publications, and networking, and apply relevant best practices to the organization.

Protect company operations and decision-making by maintaining strict confidentiality of financial information, plans, compensation data, and other sensitive information.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, cash management, and internal controls.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to translate financial information into actionable business insights.

Strong business acumen and curiosity, with an understanding of how work is sold, purchased, delivered, billed, collected, and managed.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated commitment to process improvement, data integrity, technology, and automation.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with ERP and financial reporting systems required.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field required.

Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience required.

Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.

Experience in a project-based, construction, distribution, or service environment, including exposure to job costing, work in process, inventory, or project billing, preferred.

Experience using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or similar ERP system preferred.

CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant advanced credential preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Travel Requirements:

5-10% local day travel to Mulhaupts locations, business meetings, or other company-related activities may be required.

Minimal overnight travel to industry conferences or trainings.

This job description outlines the primary responsibilities expected in this role. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary to meet evolving department and organizational needs.
