Job description
The Director of Nursing provides leadership and has 24‑hour responsibility and accountability for the successful operation of a designated unit/department/service. They also participate as a member of the hospital's management team in planning, policy formulation and administrative decision making with particular reference to the role, functions and operation of the unit/department/service. Finally, the DON is a steward of the hospital's mission and service excellence program.
SUPERVISION
Reports directly to Chief Nursing Officer
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Develops, implements and enforces policies and procedures which support the Hospital's mission, goals and objectives.
Ensures that staff complies with mandatory education, licensure requirements, mandatory health requirements, etc.
Develops annual departmental budget and operates within budgetary guidelines.
Recommends and ensures appropriate staffing levels. Allocates resources according to priorities.
Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner.
Gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
Develops alternative solutions.
Generates creative solutions and attention to detail.
Demonstrates persistence and follow through even when faced with adversity or challenges.
Balances team and individual responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
B.S. Degree preferred; A.D. accepted.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a charge nurse or unit coordinator role in an acute care hospital.
Current RN licensure in the State of Louisiana or compact state license; current CPR, ACLS, PALS as required by policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may require evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the unit/department/service.
Requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to deal with stressful situations and conflict resolution.
Must have normal hearing or utilize adaptive devices to listen with a stethoscope to discern breath sounds, heart sounds, bowel sounds.
