About Next Step

Next Step is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that empowers teens and young adults living with serious chronic illnesses—including cancer, HIV, sickle cell disease, rare genetic conditions, and other health challenges—to envision and create their brightest future. Through community, music, and mentorship, we help young people move from “Why me?” to “What’s next?” All programs are offered free of charge.

Position Overview

Next Step is seeking a strategic, detail-oriented, and collaborative Director of Operations & Finance to oversee the financial health, operational infrastructure, human resources administration, and organizational systems that support our mission. This senior leadership role works closely with the Executive Director, leadership team, Finance Committee, Board of Directors, staff, auditors, vendors, and external partners.

Key Responsibilities

Lead budgeting, cash flow forecasting, financial planning, reporting, and analysis.

Oversee accounting systems, monthly close, audits, internal controls, and nonprofit compliance.

Prepare clear financial reports, dashboards, and presentations for the Finance Committee and Board.

Manage HR administration, including onboarding, payroll, benefits, personnel records, and policy support.

Strengthen operational systems, vendor relationships, contracts, insurance, records, and organizational workflows.

Support grant budgets, restricted funding tracking, event reconciliations, and cross-department planning.

Collaborate closely with the Executive Director on organizational strategy.

Ideal Candidate

Strong nonprofit financial management, budgeting, audit, and reporting experience.

Experience managing operations, administrative systems, HR administration, and organizational infrastructure.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate financial information for non-financial audiences.

High integrity, discretion, attention to detail, collaborative leadership style, and deep commitment to Next Step’s mission.
