Position Summary
The Electrical Assembly Technician / Machine Builder is a hands-on manufacturing role responsible for the electrical wiring, assembly, checkout, and troubleshooting of Spartanics industrial machinery. This individual serves as the primary electrical assembly resource on assigned machine builds and owns the quality, completeness, organization, and accuracy of machine wiring from electrical schematics through readiness for controls startup. The position also performs mechanical assembly and supports pneumatic, hydraulic, testing, installation, and commissioning activities as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Serve as the primary electrical assembly resource on assigned machine builds, taking ownership of machine wiring quality and completeness through readiness for controls startup and testing.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, bills of material, mechanical assembly drawings, and revision-controlled engineering documentation.
• Perform point-to-point machine wiring; route, identify, label, terminate, and connect wires and cables in a neat, organized, serviceable, and consistent manner.
• Install and connect electrical devices including terminal blocks, sensors, switches, motors, drives, power supplies, safety devices, operator controls, I/O devices, heaters, and related industrial components.
• Properly prepare and terminate conductors using ferrules, terminals, connectors, crimping tools, wire strippers, soldering equipment, and other electrical assembly tools appropriate to the application.
• Apply safe electrical work practices and correctly identify and work around applicable voltage levels, current requirements, single- and three-phase power, grounding, shielding, and separation of power and signal wiring.
• Verify completed wiring against schematics, perform continuity and basic electrical checks, identify wiring or component discrepancies, and correct issues prior to machine power-up.
• Troubleshoot electrical problems during assembly, startup, factory testing, installation, and service using schematics, test equipment, systematic fault isolation, and sound technical judgment.
• Perform mechanical machine assembly as needed, including installation of components, brackets, guarding, motors, sensors, cable-management hardware, fasteners, and other machine assemblies from engineering drawings.
• Assist with pneumatic and hydraulic installation, machine setup, adjustment, testing, and troubleshooting, and distinguish between electrical, mechanical, controls, pneumatic, hydraulic, and setup-related issues.
• Work closely with Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, manufacturing, service, and operations during machine startup and debugging; clearly communicate schematic, drawing, BOM, fitment, or build discrepancies requiring engineering action.
• Use company ERP, drawing-viewer, and document-management systems to verify work orders, BOMs, parts, drawings, schematics, revisions, shortages, and job status; maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and return tools and materials to designated locations.
Measures of Success
• Machines are wired accurately, neatly, safely, and completely, with minimal avoidable rework during startup and commissioning.
• Electrical assembly is completed on schedule and consistently reaches controls startup with clear labeling, organized routing, correct terminations, and serviceable workmanship.
• Build, drawing, and component issues are identified early, communicated clearly, and resolved before they create larger schedule, quality, or field-service problems.
• The technician works independently from engineering documentation while collaborating effectively with engineering and other assemblers to improve quality, repeatability, and build efficiency.
Required Qualifications
• Previous hands-on experience with industrial electrical assembly, machine wiring, control panels, automation equipment, OEM machinery, or a closely related electrical manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to read and work independently from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and machine assembly drawings.
• Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical components, wiring practices, electrical safety, conductor preparation, terminations, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
• Experience using crimpers, wire strippers, soldering equipment, multimeters, hand tools, power tools, and other electrical and mechanical assembly equipment.
• Mechanical aptitude and the ability to assemble, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair machine components using prints, drawings, proper tools, and appropriate fastening methods.
• Ability to systematically troubleshoot machine problems and determine whether the root cause is electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, controls-related, or setup-related.
• Ability to use or learn ERP systems, electronic drawing viewers, and engineering document-management tools to access BOMs, work orders, schematics, drawings, revisions, and production information.
• Strong attention to detail, craftsmanship, organization, communication, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a cross-functional machine-build team.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience building, wiring, testing, or commissioning custom industrial machinery, converting equipment, material-handling systems, or other automated capital equipment.
• Experience wiring machinery containing PLC I/O, servo drives, VFDs, motors, encoders, sensors, safety circuits, industrial networks, and distributed control components.
• Experience with machine startup, factory acceptance testing, customer installation, field service, or commissioning support.
• Familiarity with pneumatic and hydraulic systems and the ability to assist with installation and troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with industrial machine electrical standards and good wiring practices; PLC programming experience is helpful but is not required for this position.
Work Schedule and Travel
Standard working hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM based on the assigned schedule. Overtime may be required based on production demands, project schedules, machine installations, and customer commitments. Travel is required as business needs dictate and may include domestic and occasional international assignments. The employee must have reliable transportation and maintain, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license, REAL ID, and passport. Overtime is frequently required during installation and travel assignments.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in an active manufacturing and machine-assembly environment. The position requires regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing, use of hand and power tools, access to machine frames and electrical enclosures, and work around equipment during assembly and testing. The position may occasionally require lifting or moving items up to approximately 30 pounds, with heavier components handled using appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment. Required electrical, machine, and personal protective equipment procedures must be followed, with or without reasonable accommodation.
