About this opportunity
JLRD, Inc lists this Electrical Project Engineer - Mep/Building Systems opportunity in west palm beach, Florida. Review the employer’s description below for duties, qualifications and application requirements.
Job description
JLRD, Inc. is a Florida-based MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and fire protection consulting engineering firm founded in 1991. Headquartered in West Palm Beach with offices in Merritt Island, Jacksonville, and Tampa, JLRD delivers all four engineering disciplines in-house across healthcare, education, government, federal, aviation, utilities and infrastructure, commercial and mixed-use, hospitality, residential, and mission-critical facilities.
We are privately owned and engineering-led. We compete on technical depth, not scale, and we build teams accordingly.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Electrical Project Engineer is a hands-on engineering leader within JLRD's Electrical discipline. This role owns the electrical design effort on assigned projects from schematic design through construction administration, coordinates across disciplines, communicates directly with clients and project stakeholders, and applies independent engineering judgment to deliver technically sound, high-quality projects.
This is a hands-on engineering and project ownership role , not a production-only design role. We are looking for an Electrical Project Engineer who understands complex building electrical systems, can independently make engineering and system-selection decisions, and has the project judgment to manage scope, schedule, budget, and multidisciplinary coordination. The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer or has passed the PE exam with licensure pending and is ready to take meaningful ownership of projects while continuing to grow toward greater senior engineering leadership.
This position reports to the Electrical Department Lead.
Position is based in West Palm Beach, or Merritt Island, Florida. On-site.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Electrical Design & Engineering
Manage electrical design efforts on multiple concurrent projects from schematic design through construction administration
Design power distribution, lighting and controls, fire alarm, low-voltage, emergency and standby power, grounding, and lightning protection systems

Prepare and review construction documents, specifications, and engineering calculations
Verify compliance with applicable NEC, NFPA, Florida Building Code, and project-specific regulatory requirements
Lead system-selection decisions and support project planning through construction completion
Project Coordination & Management
Coordinate electrical design with Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Architectural, and Structural disciplines
Communicate directly with clients, architects, contractors, and project stakeholders
Manage project-level scope, schedule, and budget while monitoring fee performance and proactively identifying scope changes
Participate in BIM coordination meetings and support permitting and agency review processes
Exercise independent engineering judgment to identify and resolve technical and coordination issues
Construction Administration
Provide construction administration support, including shop drawing and submittal review, RFI responses, site observations, and punch lists
Evaluate construction change orders and provide ROM cost estimating
Support commissioning and project closeout activities
Conduct site visits and field observations
Team Development & Quality
Mentor and direct EITs and designers assigned to project teams
Contribute to internal QA/QC processes and peer reviews
Support recruiting and interviewing activities as needed
Help maintain JLRD's technical standards and expectations for quality project delivery

Working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 72, and applicable Florida codes
Experience with SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or equivalent power-analysis software
Strong project management, communication, client-facing, and multidisciplinary coordination skills
Ability to exercise sound independent engineering judgment and take ownership of assigned projects
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Florida Professional Engineer license
Healthcare project experience involving FGI and AHCA requirements
Education-sector experience involving SREF requirements
Federal facilities experience, including UFC and USACE design standards
