Job description

Job Title

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

Duties include:

ED physicians provide backup to Inpatient Unit during emergencies or during unexpected absence of the hospital covering provider.

The ED physician may need to respond to codes or other emergencies within the facility, although the primary responsibility for this rests with the Hospitalist team.

Shifts times and staffing patterns are subject to change to ensure efficient use of medical center resources and appropriate levels of care are maintained. Occasionally, if another ED physician is unexpectedly absent, other ED physicians will be contacted to provide backup coverage.

Evaluation, stabilization and movement to definitive care of acute medical, surgical, and trauma conditions that present to the ED.

Assessment and initiation of treatment of ongoing or chronic conditions that present to the ED while facilitating delivery of the patient to the appropriate level of follow up care.

Completion of patient care encounters using CPRS, the current VA electronic medical record (or any subsequently adopted EHR system). Hospital policies regarding documentation are described separately.

All outgoing EM providers will provide a verbal, bedside sign-out, to the incoming EM provider. The sign-out will encompass a report of patient condition, pending studies, special instructions, etc. Stable patients admitted to the hospital, or awaiting transfer to another facility, do not require bedside sign-out.

Provide patient first focused care while practicing evidence based cost effective medicine.

Ensure practice consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice emergency medicine guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies

Education of any students of medicine and residents within the teaching facility.

Participation in facility and university conferences, committees, administrative duties, and research to ensure continuous quality improvement in patient care and medical advances
