Job description

The following opportunity is offered through the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) . AEOP Internships and Fellowships are intended to provide participants with meaningful research opportunities within an U.S. Army Research Laboratory or Center. This specific opportunity is based at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. It is a paid research appointment and not a government position.

Project Description:

The mission of the United States Military Academy at West Point is to build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets to be commissioned leaders of character who are committed to the Army Values and ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation. As an Energy Resilience Fellow, the primary responsibility for this position will be to provide technical expertise as a senior member of the West Point Energy Resilience research team within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The Energy Resilience Fellow will work directly with Dr. Todd Davidson to develop, scope, and execute research associated with energy systems. The position will support cadet work while also executing additional energy system‑related projects with collaborators across the Army and national defense ecosystem. This work will include optimization of microgrids by modeling energy infrastructure, including asset and dispatch strategies to increase resilience. The work might also include analytical and empirical assessment of electric and hybridized vehicles, small modular reactors, alternatives fuels, portable power systems, engine design, hardening of infrastructure, solutions to reduce fuel supply lines (e.g., solar PV), technoeconomic analysis, and more topics associated with energy systems that can drive resilience, security, and performance. The candidate will also have an opportunity to interface with senior decision makers within military and civilian offices, represent West Point as a subject matter expert, and build collaborative relationships with other departments at West Point, national labs, and other relevant institutions, including prominent academic partners.

Candidate Requirements:

The candidate needs to be highly motivated to study, mentor, and publish as a thought leader in the field of energy systems and to support the mission of the United States Military Academy. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in a relevant field and have shown a successful track record of publishing high‑quality literature related to energy systems, including electricity dispatch modeling. Candidates with a degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering as well as candidates with degrees in mathematics, operations research, and optimization will be considered. Candidates in the process of completing their graduate degree (PhD or Masters) will also be considered. Expertise in energy systems is sought, but candidates without a background in energy will also be considered if they have a strong background in system optimization and operations research.

Valuable skills for the position:

Energy systems modeling; Technoeconomic analysis; Multi‑objective optimization; Electricity dispatch modeling; Programming (Python, Matlab, Julia, etc); Thermodynamics; Data management; User interface development; Decision support tools.
