Job description

*Qualifications may warrant greater starting base pay within the full pay range. Individual base pay is determined by experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.

This position is responsible for the analysis of the Cooperative’s transmission and distribution system, and the design and construction of complex electrical power systems.

Compile and evaluate design and test data

Prepare technical specifications and analyze technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process or materials specifications

Prepare and study technical drawings, specifications of electrical systems and topographical maps to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements

Operate computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks

Confer with engineers, customers and others to discuss existing or potential engineering projects and products

Direct and coordinate manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes and customer requirements

Design, implement, maintain and improve electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, components, products and systems for commercial, industrial and domestic purposes

Develop specifications for purchase of materials and equipment

Perform detailed calculations to compute and establish manufacturing, construction and installation standards and specifications

Investigate customer or public complaints, determine nature and extent of problem and recommend remedial measures

Oversee project production efforts to assure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time and within budget

Manage the design and construction of large transmission, substation, and distribution construction projects

Plan and implement research methodology and procedures to apply principles of electrical theory to engineering projects

Collect data and gather information or documents

Perform a variety of standard engineering computations and analysis

Prepare engineering drawings, maps and construction specifications

Perform staking and survey work

Perform transmission and distribution system studies, develop project justifications, and develop project cost estimates for capital budget

Research material specifications and resolve material issues

Perform construction inspections

Support North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance program

Coordinate with consultants, members, developers and government entities on all projects

Serve as technical advisor on department initiatives

Oversee design and construction of major transmission, substation, and/or distribution system projects or programs

Provide guidance to other department engineers and staff

Develop and present formal training on various engineering and power system related topics

Complete assigned projects and identification of system needs for the development of future projects and future improvements

Develop programs and procedures

Maintain the security of confidential information

Stay abreast of advances in technology

Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned

Supervisory and/or Leadership Responsibilities

A range of leadership activities, training, effectively communicating policies and other information to subordinates, and ensuring that employees have a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Serve in a lead capacity when manager is out of the office.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data or processing information

Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service

Knowledge of Power System materials

Skilled in time management

Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to internal and external customers

Ability to lead and direct a work team

Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing

Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems

Ability to read and understand schematics and design drawings

Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)

Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field

Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas

Ten years of related work experience

Valid Texas Driver’s License

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The employee may be required to stand; reach with hands and arms, stoop and kneel

The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time

The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, pull or move up to 25 pounds

The employee may be required to travel

Exempt employees receive a fixed bi-weekly salary to compensate them for all hours worked during each pay period

This position may be required to work more than 40 hours per week
