Job description

Equine Associate Veterinarian

Oakhurst Equine Veterinary Services | Newberg, Oregon

We’re looking for an equine veterinarian who wants to do more than fill a position.

Oakhurst Equine Veterinary Services is an established, busy equine practice in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. We have a strong client base, a diverse caseload, experienced veterinarians, and a lot of opportunity ahead of us.

We’re looking for the right veterinarian to become part of that future.

And we’re interested in what you can bring to Oakhurst—not just what Oakhurst can do for you.

What do you do particularly well?

What area of equine medicine do you want to develop?

What have you seen other practices do well—or poorly—that you would like to improve?

What ideas do you have for making a veterinary practice better for its doctors, staff, clients, and patients?

If you’re the kind of veterinarian who notices things, asks questions, takes ownership, and thinks “there has to be a better way to do this,” we want to talk with you.

What You Could Bring to Oakhurst

We don't expect every veterinarian to arrive with the same interests or experience. We do expect our associates to contribute.

You might bring:

A strong interest or advanced experience in sports medicine and lameness

Expertise in reproduction, dentistry, podiatry, internal medicine, surgery, or diagnostic imaging

An interest in developing a particular service or area of the practice

New ideas for improving patient care, client communication, scheduling, workflow, or practice efficiency

A willingness to share your knowledge and learn from the veterinarians around you

The ability to work independently while knowing when collaboration makes a case better

A genuine interest in helping develop the next generation of equine veterinarians

The initiative to identify opportunities rather than waiting to be told what needs to be done

We are not looking for someone who simply wants to come in, see appointments, go home, and repeat.

We want someone who takes pride in the practice they work for and wants to leave it better than they found it.

What We Do

Oakhurst provides a broad range of equine veterinary services, including:

Sports Medicine & Lameness

Reproduction

Podiatry

Dentistry

Internal & Preventive Medicine

Surgery and standing surgical procedures

Diagnostic Imaging, including radiography and ultrasound

Pre-purchase examinations

Regenerative therapies

Ambulatory and emergency care

Our caseload provides the opportunity to see everything from routine ambulatory medicine to challenging lameness, performance, reproductive, and medical cases.

We are particularly interested in veterinarians with a strong interest in lameness and sports medicine, as well as veterinarians who can bring additional expertise to the practice.

What We Expect From You

You don't need to know everything. None of us do.

You do need to be curious, dependable, willing to communicate, and willing to take responsibility for your work.

We value veterinarians who:

Think critically rather than simply following the usual way of doing things

Communicate directly and professionally

Build lasting relationships with clients

Treat assistants and coworkers with respect

Ask for help when they need it—and offer it when someone else does

Accept feedback and are willing to give constructive feedback

Continue learning

Take ownership of problems and participate in finding solutions

Care about the long-term success of the practice, not just their own schedule

We want colleagues, not placeholders.

What We Offer

In return, Oakhurst offers the structure and resources to allow a good veterinarian to build a good career.

Our compensation includes a first-year guaranteed Pro-Salary base with production-based compensation, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

Medical allowance

Professional liability insurance

Continuing education allowance

Professional memberships

Disability coverage

Retirement program

Production-based compensation

Shared emergency call

Paid time away from the practice

We believe compensation should reflect the workload, responsibility, experience, skills, and contribution each veterinarian brings to the practice.

We also believe a sustainable career matters. Our goal is not to create veterinarians who are constantly exhausted. We want our doctors to have time for their own horses, families, interests, and lives outside of work.

Why Oakhurst?

We’ve been practicing equine medicine in the Willamette Valley for decades. We have an established practice—but we're not interested in simply maintaining the status quo.

There are things we do very well.

There are things we can do better.

And there are things we haven't even thought of yet.

That’s where you come in.

If you have an idea for a service we should develop, a system we should change, a skill you want to bring to the practice, or a better way to approach something we currently do, we want to hear it.

You don't have to arrive with all the answers. But we'd like you to arrive with curiosity, initiative, and something to contribute.

And Then There’s Oregon

Oakhurst is located in Newberg, in the heart of Oregon wine country and within easy reach of Portland, the Oregon Coast, and the Cascade Mountains.

It’s a pretty good place to live if you happen to like horses, good food, wine, hiking, skiing, riding, or having somewhere beautiful to escape to when you're not working.

But Oregon isn't the reason to join Oakhurst.

The opportunity to be part of building something better is.

Who We’d Like to Meet

We welcome veterinarians at different stages of their careers. Experience matters, but attitude, initiative, and the desire to contribute matter just as much.

We are especially interested in veterinarians with experience or a strong interest in lameness and sports medicine and are also interested in connecting with board-certified or board-eligible surgeons and internal medicine specialists who could help expand these areas of our practice.

If you're looking for a place where you can practice good medicine, develop your own strengths, contribute your ideas, and have a real voice in the future of the practice, we'd like to meet you.

DVM or equivalent veterinary degree and eligibility for licensure in Oregon

Previous equine veterinary experience preferred; new graduates with strong equine experience and demonstrated initiative are welcome to apply

Strong interest and/or experience in lameness and sports medicine is highly desirable

Sound clinical judgment and the ability to work independently while knowing when collaboration is needed

Strong communication skills and professional client relationships, with an expectation of clear, timely medical records, accurate documentation, and appropriate billing for services provided

Willingness to participate in emergency and shared on-call responsibilities

Demonstrated ability to take ownership of cases, follow through, and communicate effectively with clients and the team

Curiosity and initiative—someone who looks for ways to improve patient care, client service, efficiency, and the practice as a whole

Willingness to learn, accept constructive feedback, and share knowledge with others

Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute positively to practice culture

Professionalism, reliability, and a genuine commitment to high-quality equine medicine

A desire to contribute something of your own to an established practice and help shape its future
