Equipment Operator IIIThe County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division. This position is located at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, Florida and will be responsible for operating heavy equipment for daily operations. This position requires a high degree of proficiency and dexterity in operating landfill heavy equipment. The candidate must be able to operate a bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck, and waste separation equipment. NOTE: This position's schedule will be four (4) 10 hours days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. This position will be exposed to outdoor elements, fumes, dust, uneven ground, low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity. *Overtime may be required, and schedules may change based on operational needs.Illustrative duties include:Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary landfill.Directs truck drivers to dumping locationsOperates a bulldozer in fill area.Operates off road dump truck.Transports equipment to and from construction siteParticipates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.Operates excavator.Operates front end loader.Loads dirt, mulch, and other construction materials.Operates landfill compactor.Operates a semi-trailer with walking floor on regional roadways and in a landfill working environment.Operates a large front-end loader in an enclosed waste transfer facility with truck traffic using tipping floor attachments.Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.Performs routine service and maintenance.May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needsAttends work on a regular and consistent basis.Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.Responds to emergency situations.Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum requirements include completion of the eight (8) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment. Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements. *Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license.Knowledge, skills, and abilities include thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the operation and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; skilled in the operation of complex construction equipment; ability to establish effective working relationships; must be able to work under stressful conditions; must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.ADA REQUIREMENTS: Physical Demands: Ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities and meet the minimum qualifications. Ability to lift, push (arm and leg), pull 50 pounds, reach, climb, visual acuity (depth perception and peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle; sit turn (neck and body), and handle.Environmental Demands: Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.Mental Demands : Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details.
