Job description
Equipment Operator (Wheel Loader / Excavator)The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment — primarily wheel loaders and excavators — in support of daily MRF operations. This role plays a critical part in the movement, sorting, and processing of incoming materials across the facility. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, mechanically aware, and experienced in operating heavy equipment in a fast-paced industrial environment.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesOperate wheel loaders, excavators, and other heavy equipment to move, sort, load, and stage recyclable and solid waste materials throughout the facilityPush up, pile, and manage material stockpiles on the tipping floor and throughout the facility to maintain efficient material flowLoad and position materials for processing equipment including shredders, screens, and balersPerform pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections; identify and report any mechanical issues, fluid leaks, or safety concerns to the supervisorMaintain equipment in clean, safe, and operable condition, including routine maintenance tasks such as fueling, greasing, and fluid checksFollow all facility safety protocols, OSHA regulations, and company policies at all timesCommunicate effectively with floor personnel, spotters, and supervisors to ensure safe equipment movement in and around pedestrian areasAssist in maintaining an orderly and organized work area to minimize hazards and maximize throughputRespond to operational needs including clearing jams or blockages as directedComplete required daily logs, inspection forms, and documentation accuratelyPerform other duties as assigned by the Site SupervisorQualifications Required: Minimum 2 years of verifiable experience operating wheel loaders and/or excavators in a commercial, industrial, or waste/recycling environmentDemonstrated ability to safely operate equipment in confined or congested spaces with pedestrian trafficKnowledge of equipment inspection procedures and basic preventive maintenanceAbility to read and follow safety signage, written instructions, and operational proceduresStrong situational awareness and commitment to a safety-first work cultureAbility to work in varying outdoor and indoor environmental conditions, including exposure to dust, noise, and odors associated with waste processingAbility to work overtime, weekends, or holidays as operational needs require Preferred: Experience working in a materials recovery facility (MRF), transfer station, landfill, or similar waste/recycling operationFamiliarity with OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 General Industry or Construction standardsValid driver's license with a clean driving recordExperience operating additional equipment such as skid steers, forklifts, or bulldozersPhysical RequirementsFrequently required to climb into and out of equipment cabs, which may require use of ladders or elevated step platformsMust be able to sit for extended periods while operating heavy equipmentOccasional lifting, carrying, or moving of objects up to 50 lbs.Must be able to work in environments with noise, dust, vibration, and variable temperaturesWork EnvironmentThis position operates primarily in an active MRF environment that includes indoor tipping floors, outdoor staging areas, and material processing areas. The employee will be regularly exposed to moving equipment, heavy machinery, recyclable and solid waste materials, dust, and varying weather conditions.
