Job description

Facilities & Maintenance AssistantDenver Audubon is seeking a reliable, practical, and resourceful Facilities & Maintenance Assistant to help keep the Kingery Nature Center and its facilities safe, functional, welcoming, and ready for staff, visitors, volunteers, and programs.This is a flexible, part-time hourly position averaging approximately 8–10 hours per week, with hours varying based on facility needs. The Facilities & Maintenance Assistant serves as Denver Audubon's primary point person for routine building and facility needs and is responsible for seeing maintenance issues through from identification to resolution.For routine needs, this may mean completing the repair directly. When a project requires a specialized or licensed professional, the Facilities & Maintenance Assistant is responsible for coordinating the work from start to finish—including identifying the appropriate vendor, obtaining estimates when needed, scheduling the work, providing access to the facility, monitoring completion, and confirming that the issue has been resolved.Primary ResponsibilitiesBuilding & Facility MaintenanceConduct routine checks of buildings and facilities to identify maintenance, safety, or operational needs.Complete minor repairs and general handyperson tasks, including replacing light bulbs, tightening hardware, hanging items, assembling furniture, minor patching, and other basic repairs.Troubleshoot basic building and technology issues, including lighting, audiovisual equipment, internet-connected devices, projectors, screens, and equipment used for programs and meetings.Identify and respond to minor leaks, plumbing concerns, electrical issues, HVAC concerns, and other facility problems.Perform light cleaning and spot cleaning as needed to keep spaces ready for visitors and programs.Remove trash, recycling, construction debris, branches, and other large or bulky materials that cannot be handled through routine custodial service.Help maintain storage areas, workspaces, outdoor areas, and other facility spaces in a safe and orderly condition.Assist with seasonal facility needs and preparation for programs, rentals, meetings, and special events.Monitor maintenance and facility supplies and coordinate replenishment as needed.Vendor & Repair CoordinationServe as the primary point person for maintenance and repair projects requiring outside vendors or specialized contractors.Determine when a maintenance issue can be addressed internally and when professional or licensed assistance is needed.Identify and contact appropriate contractors or service providers.Obtain estimates or bids when appropriate and secure organizational approval before authorizing significant expenses.Schedule repairs and service appointments and coordinate contractor access to the property.Communicate the scope of the issue and Denver Audubon's needs to vendors.Monitor work and follow up on outstanding repairs.Confirm that work has been satisfactorily completed before considering a maintenance issue resolved.Maintain basic records of repairs, service providers, warranties, recurring maintenance needs, and completed work.Flag larger facility needs, significant expenses, or capital improvements for the Executive Director.In short: when something at the Nature Center isn't working, this position owns the process of getting it working again.Other Facility SupportOccasionally assist staff with basic care of educational animals, if appropriate based on experience and training. This may include feeding, cleaning enclosures, or monitoring animal spaces.Perform other facility-support duties as needed.Schedule and Work EnvironmentThis is an as-needed, part-time position expected to average approximately 8–10 hours per week. Hours will vary depending on maintenance needs, projects, events, and the season, and Denver Audubon cannot guarantee a minimum number of hours each week. Most duties must be performed on-site at the Kingery Nature Center. Some administrative tasks related to scheduling vendors, obtaining estimates, or coordinating repairs may be completed remotely when appropriate. Scheduling can generally be flexible and coordinated in advance, although occasional availability to respond to time-sensitive facility needs is preferred. The position requires reliable transportation to and from the Kingery Nature Center and the ability to perform routine physical maintenance tasks, including standing, bending, reaching, using a step ladder, and lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.QualificationsThe ideal candidate is someone who notices when something isn't working and takes ownership of getting it fixed.Candidates should have:General knowledge of basic building maintenance and handyperson tasks.Comfort using common hand and power tools safely.Ability to troubleshoot routine facility and technology issues.Good judgment about what can be safely handled independently and when a professional contractor is needed.Ability to communicate effectively with contractors and service providers and coordinate work through completion.Strong organizational skills and the ability to keep track of multiple maintenance needs, appointments, and follow-up items.Reliability and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.Good judgment about obtaining approval before incurring significant or unplanned expenses.Commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, program participants, and visitors.Comfort working around nature, wildlife, and outdoor environments.Previous professional maintenance or facilities experience is helpful but not required.BenefitsCompensation This is a part-time, non-exempt employee position paid at $20.00–$22.00 per hour.
