Job description

FirefighterThe City of Tolleson is seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as Firefighters. Firefighters are responsible for providing fire suppression and emergency medical services, along with fire prevention, hazardous materials response and mitigation, public education, and problem-solving; maintaining Fire Department equipment; participating in training; providing community and customer service; and performing various administrative functions.Other duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining strength and cardiovascular health through physical conditioning and exercise; attending staff meetings; interacting with citizens and other departments and agencies; conducting hydrant flow testing, inspections, and maintaining service records; performing life-safety inspections; and maintaining proper records.Note: The City of Tolleson is creating an eligibility list for the position of Lateral Firefighter. Candidates are required to complete the NTN exam and department application to be considered for the position.For purposes of this recruitment, candidates must meet the City of Tolleson's minimum qualifications and be eligible to attend a regionally approved Bridge Academy. A Bridge Academy is a regionally approved six-week training academy consisting of a minimum of 214.5 hours of training and designed for eligible professional firefighters.Candidates must qualify for the Bridge Academy through one of the following eligibility pathways:The candidate has graduated from a Central Arizona Life Safety Council (CALSC) regional training academy, has a gap in professional firefighter employment of less than one year, and is currently certified to practice emergency medical care through the Arizona Department of Health Services as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic; orThe candidate is currently working as a full-time, paid professional firefighter within the State of Arizona, possesses valid Arizona Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications, and is currently certified to practice emergency medical care through the Arizona Department of Health Services as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic.Candidates must also meet all prerequisite job requirements of the City of Tolleson. Candidates who do not meet the Bridge Academy eligibility requirements may be required to attend a full regional training academy and may not qualify for this lateral recruitment.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED from an accredited institution and two (2) years of prior experience as a full-time, paid professional firefighter.Candidates must possess current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) through the Arizona Department of Health Services and valid Arizona Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications. Certification as a Paramedic through the Arizona Department of Health Services is preferred.Candidates must possess a valid Arizona driver's license or obtain one within one (1) month of the date of hire.Supplemental information will be required for the application to be considered. To be considered, applicants must provide copies of the following by email to :A three-year driving history report from the Motor Vehicle Division;Current Arizona Department of Health Services certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic;Valid Arizona Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications;Documentation demonstrating eligibility to attend a regionally approved Bridge Academy, including proof of CALSC regional academy completion or current full-time professional firefighter employment in Arizona, as applicable;Proof of successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the last twelve (12) months; andA valid Arizona driver's license. Candidates who do not possess a valid Arizona driver's license must obtain one within one (1) month of the date of hire.Testing InformationThis hiring process includes the following steps:Complete a City of Tolleson application;Complete online testing through the National Testing Network;Participate in an interview;Undergo a recruit practical assessment; andSuccessfully complete the remaining requirements of the selection process.Knowledge of:Principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting;Fire prevention principles and practices;Emergency Medical Technician basic life-support procedures and paramedic support procedures;Extrication and the use of extrication tools;Departmental policies, rules, and instructions for firefighting and rescue activities;Basic mathematical and science skills;Principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance;City geography and street systems; andModern office technology.Skills in:Principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting;Fire prevention principles and practices;Emergency Medical Technician basic life-support procedures and paramedic support procedures;Extrication and the use of extrication tools;Departmental policies, rules, and instructions for firefighting and rescue activities;Basic mathematical and science skills;Principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance;City geography and street systems; andModern office technology.Other RequirementsCandidates must be willing to work various shifts, including a 48/96 schedule.Physical DemandsPositions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, and repetitive motions.Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, blood and other bodily fluids, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noise, travel, and environmental conditions such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and threatening environments.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an incumbent may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.Job InformationThe City of Tolleson is currently hiring and establishing an eligibility list for the Lateral Firefighter position.The City of Tolleson is offering an $8,000 hiring bonus to qualified lateral firefighters. Fifty percent (50%) of the bonus will be paid upon hire, with the remaining fifty percent (50%) awarded after successful completion of the City's introductory probationary training period. Candidates must commit to a minimum of three (3) years of service.Closing Date: Open until filled.
