Job description

CustodianFull-time, 12-month position benefit eligible.Qualifications:Knowledge of plant operation and maintenance; cleaning methods and procedures; heating and ventilation; proper handling of hazardous materials.Black Seal License preferred.Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.Minimum experience as determined by the Board.Successful completion of required criminal history check and proof of U.S. citizenship or resident alien status.Schedule/location: Shift/location to be determined.Compensation: See Custodial Salary Guide.Benefits: Medical/prescription, sick/personal/vacation days, optional 403(b) and FSA accounts available.Union affiliation: CTEA.Reports to: Building Principal & Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds.Residency Law: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (P.L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act", effective September 1, 2011, all newly hired public employees, including public school district employees must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under the law. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date of hire to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your position in New Jersey.Job Goal: To provide a safe, clean and comfortable school environment.Performance Responsibilities:Building Security: Opens/closes the building each day. Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.Building Maintenance: Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times. Operates heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water and electricity. Cleans and dusts classrooms, offices, library, and faculty room daily; empties wastebaskets in these areas. Cleans corridors after each school day and during the day when their condition requires it. Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures and floors daily and replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed. Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily. Cleans cafeteria/dining areas after use. Obeys all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation. Cleans chalkboards daily.Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the principal or Supervisor/Assistant of Buildings and Grounds.Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste and debris.Conducts and ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making minor repairs and reporting major repair needs promptly to the Principal or Supervisor/Assistant of Buildings and Grounds.Cleans all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.Grounds Maintenance: Keeps the grounds free from rubbish and debris. Shovels, plows, salts and/or sweeps sidewalks, steps, driveway and parking areas as necessary. Displays the U.S. flag during school hours on days when school is in session. Performs ground-keeping chores including grass cutting, tree trimming, leaf raking and removal of litter, to maintain the grounds in a safe and attractive condition.Other: May be required to wear a standard uniform selected by the district for security purposes. Complies with all required/mandated training programs and updates. Performs other duties related to the efficient operation of the school building as assigned by the designated Principal or Supervisor/Assistant of Buildings and Grounds.Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be determined by the Board.Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with NJ State law and the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of non-certified personnel.Adopted: 9/2010.Revised: 7/27/15.
