Job description
Grounds Keeper IQualifications: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and education and/or experience in grounds work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade and equivalent to two years of experience in planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses.Requirements: Must be able to bend, push, pull, and lift at least 50 lbs. Must have a current, valid driver's license with a clean driving record Must be able to operate power tools and lawn equipment.Job Goal: An employee in this class uses simple tools to maintain grounds, including planting, cultivating, pruning, and cutting plants, trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers. Assignments are generally routine and repetitive in nature. Detailed instructions are given, and problems are referred to a supervisor. Work performance is inspected and evaluated based on grounds appearance, and errors are quickly revealed. The employee receives direct supervision.Illustrative Examples of Work:Cuts lawnsTrims and edgesPrune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growthRemoves damaged leaves, branches, and twigsRakes and composts or disposes of leavesCleans grounds and removes litterShovels snow from walks and drivewaysSpreads salt and sand on public pathways to prevent ice buildupPlants include grass, flowers, trees, and shrubsWaters' lawn, shrubs, and flowersCleans out drainage ditches and culvertsSharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shearsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices Working knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees. Ability to make minor repairs to lawn mowers, hoses, rakes, pruners, and sprayers Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to use and sharpen gardening toolsTerms of Employment: 12-month work year/At Will Employee.FLSA Non-Exempt Starting Salary and/or Grade: Grade 56: ($34,413.60 - $43,459.68) Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board and local polity on the evaluation of personnel
