Job description
GroundskeeperThe Groundskeeper plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing campus landscapes by mowing, trimming, planting, pruning, watering, and caring for turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds using hand tools and power equipment. This role also installs, inspects, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on irrigation systems, while supporting landscape construction projects such as grading, concrete work, drainage repairs, and asphalt maintenance. The position is ideal for someone with at least two years of landscape maintenance experience who takes pride in creating safe, attractive, and well-maintained outdoor spaces.ResponsibilitiesMaintain campus grounds by mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing walkways, lawns, and common areas to ensure a neat and attractive appearance.Plant, prune, water, and care for turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds using appropriate hand tools and power equipment.Perform routine and preventative maintenance on landscaped areas, including weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and general gardening tasks.Install, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and modify irrigation systems, including valves, controllers, and underground piping.Monitor irrigation schedules and system performance to ensure efficient water usage and healthy plant growth.Safely operate landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and related tools.Support landscape construction and maintenance projects involving concrete work, asphalt repairs, drainage improvements, grading, and excavation.Identify and report landscape, irrigation, and safety issues and take appropriate action to resolve or escalate them.Work collaboratively with other maintenance and grounds staff to complete projects and daily tasks on schedule.Follow all safety procedures and guidelines when operating equipment and performing grounds maintenance activities.Essential SkillsMinimum 2 years of landscape maintenance experience, preferably in a commercial, university, or large campus environment.Knowledge of Southern California plants, turf, trees, shrubs, irrigation systems, and landscape maintenance best practices.Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and modify irrigation systems, including valves, controllers, and underground piping.Experience safely operating landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and chain saws.Understanding of concrete, asphalt, drainage, grading, and excavation work related to grounds maintenance projects.Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors for extended periods.Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of grounds appearance and safety.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience working in a college, university, or large campus environment.General mechanical aptitude for maintaining and troubleshooting landscaping equipment.History in general labor, groundskeeping, gardening, landscaping, or maintenance technician work.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks.Good communication skills to coordinate work and report issues effectively.Why Work Here?This role offers a long-term opportunity in a stable college setting, providing full benefits and the chance to build a lasting career in grounds and landscape maintenance. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., providing regular daytime hours. You will use a range of hand tools and power equipment, including mowers, tractors, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and chain saws, while performing tasks that may involve concrete, asphalt, drainage, grading, and excavation. Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, and appropriate work attire is required to ensure safety and comfort while performing physically active duties.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Los Angeles, CA.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
