Job description
The Head of Tax is a strategic advisor to the firm's principals, responsible for maximizing after-tax investment returns, managing tax risk, and leading tax strategy and compliance across the firm's ownership structure. The role partners with the investment team on transactions, capital allocation, and entity structuring to deliver practical, business-focused tax advice. Success in this role will be measured by proactive tax planning, sound judgment, and flawless execution.
Transaction Advisory (Pre-Close Involvement)
Review all material acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, recapitalizations, and investments before execution.
Identify tax risks and structuring opportunities early enough in the process to influence deal terms.
Participate directly in investment committee / deal discussions whenever tax exposure or structuring is material to the decision.
Provide tax sign-off as a required gate before finalizing transaction documents, informed by upstream involvement.
Proactively evaluate and make recommendations on strategic questions as they arise — refinance timing, hold-vs-sell decisions, entity elections and tax-efficient structuring.
Identify annual tax savings initiatives.
Own the tax/legal lens on entity structure optimization on an ongoing basis.
Family Office & Ownership Structure Coordination
Coordinate tax planning across the full ownership structure: operating entities, investment vehicles, family trusts, and charitable entities.
Coordinate with — not substitute for — outside estate planning and trust & estate counsel; this role ensures tax and estate strategies are aligned, not that it owns estate strategy itself.
Track distributions and their tax character across family trust and FLP vehicles, sourced from operating company distributions across the portfolio.
Calculate and track quarterly estimated tax payments across entities, individuals, and trust filers.
Internal Advisor
Translate complex tax issues into clear, actionable recommendations for principals and investment professionals
Serve as the primary point of contact for tax matters involving principals and investment teams.
Identify tax planning opportunities throughout the year, not just during filing season.
Process, Documentation & Knowledge Continuity
Document key tax processes and institutional knowledge.
Develop playbooks for recurring tax issues and structuring decisions.
Continuously improve tax workflows to support a scalable function.
Technology & Tax Operations
Leverage technology and AI to improve tax operations, reporting, forecasting, and compliance.
Compliance & Filing (Base Expectations)
Review and extract K-1 data across all partnership investments.
Own year-round coordination with outside CPA/tax preparation firms and legal counsel on entity-level and family-level filings.
Evaluate tax implications of restructurings, financings, and other complex transactions.
Success Metrics
Flawless, timely tax compliance.
Proactive tax planning that improves after-tax investment returns.
Effective tax support for material transactions.
Well-documented, scalable tax processes.
Qualifications
10–15+ years of progressive tax experience, including leadership of tax strategy for a family office, private investment firm, or public accounting firm serving complex private clients.
Demonstrated pre-close transaction experience.
Deep expertise in partnership taxation, real estate, and pass-through entities.
Ability to communicate complex tax matters to principals.
Experience modernizing the tax function.
