Job description
Health Support Specialist - This position is based at Port Charlotte and reports to the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. Determines eligibility and enrolls clients in the WIC Program in accordance with established procedures (WIC policy and computer manual, and local policies). Completes duties necessary for WIC certification including, but not limited to, assessing financial eligibility, utilizing information provided by the participant and referral forms to complete WIC certification screens, establishing and maintaining WIC electronic records, offering clients voter registration forms, transferring in-state and out-of-state clients, and terminating participants. Completes duties necessary for WIC EBT card issuance in accordance with established rules/manuals/policies, including instructing participants in the proper use of the WIC EBT card. Issues WIC identification cards, schedules appointments, makes phone calls to clients, and assists with maintaining the EBT card, formula, and breast pump inventories. Obtains anthropometric measurements of WIC clients in accordance with accepted policy and procedures. Performs finger stick and/or other methods used to obtain hemoglobin on WIC clients, as per state requirements. Transcribes all medical data to WIC FL-WiSE system. Properly disposes of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials, cleans up work-area to ensure that any potentially hazardous material has been disposed of or placed out of reach of others (i.e., children), keeps area clean/disinfected between clients. Follows most recent DOH/CHD management policies regarding prevention of HIV transmission. Assists nutrition staff in obtaining diet histories and nutrition education activities, which can include distribution and proper documentation of information to clients, assisting in the preparation of educational materials, and promoting breastfeeding. Assists in the proper sanitation and cleaning of medical grade breast pumps. Refers WIC clients to other community resources and assistance programs. Assists vendor manager with vendor management activities. Accurately completes all client records, HMS, EARS, People First time and leave records, etc., by required deadlines. Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and other professional and staff developmental activities. Other duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Statutes and Rules and Regulations that pertain to the WIC program Knowledge of principles, practices & office procedures Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation & grammar usage Knowledge of standard business formats & styles for letters & business forms Knowledge of theories & concepts of preventive health care, current science & practice of nutrition Knowledge of prenatal, breastfeeding, postpartum, infant and children nutrition Knowledge of breastfeeding benefits and ability to promote and educate on it Knowledge of the methods of data collection Knowledge of the principles & techniques of records management Knowledge of planning principles & techniques Skill in operating a personal computer Ability to provide nutrition education for individuals and groups Ability to assess nutritional status and develop basic nutrition plans Ability to teach and develop or select education materials Ability to operate general office equipment Ability to train others and deal effectively with a variety of people Ability to follow office procedures and practices Ability to organize and maintain filing systems Ability to handle telephone calls in a courteous and effective manner Ability to plan, organize & coordinate work assignments & communicate effectively verbally & in writing Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationship with others Ability to understand, interpret & apply applicable rules, regulations, polices & procedures Ability to prioritize individual workload, prepare reports & maintain records Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time Ability to frequently use telephone, computer, copier and small hand tools, i.e. Stapler, scissors, etic Ability to work with occasional loud noises Ability to follow instructions Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed Ability to review data for accuracy & completeness Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision Ability to work indoors with occasional temperature changesQualifications: Incumbent must possess a valid Florida driver's license. The ability to perform hemoglobin testing (training provided) on clients is required. Must be willing to work at other WIC satellite clinics as needed. Work experience in a WIC office is preferred.
