Summary

This requisition expires on September 26, 2026, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date.

Responsible for Heavy and Light Equipment operation, maintenance of equipment, and job safety, street sweeping operations and assisting in the maintenance and construction of the City of Denton drainage system.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

Essential Functions: Under general supervision, proficiently operates one or more types of light to medium sized motorized construction/maintenance equipment (i.e. warehouse/interior forklift, bobcat, backhoe, compressor, riding-compactor, vehicle for running errands, small water truck, small dump truck and utility truck) to excavate, move and/or grade material.

Operates larger motorized equipment as needed

Performs various skilled duties using hand and power tools

Performs pre-inspections and post-inspections of all equipment and trucks before and after use; performs minor maintenance activities and cleaning of equipment, and reports problems to supervisor

May set up street barricades and function as a flagger for traffic control

May perform duties in a confined space such as a manhole or trench

May confer with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor

Maintains on-call availability for after hour emergencies

Reads and understands reference books and manuals and current industry operational practices

Maintain regular and punctual on-site attendance

Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned

Operates street sweeper when required

Completes daily work order tickets

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: High school diploma or GED equivalent

Three years' experience in operation and maintenance of light equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair function operations

Proficiency in the operation of back hoe, skid steer loader and dump truck

OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers

Ability to load truck with track hoe or track loader

Basic working knowledge of excavation equipment and procedures

Preferences: Bilingual in Spanish and English

Experience with underground utilities and installation and repair of storm sewer pipe

Four years' experience in construction equipment (street sweeper, backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, etc.)

Class A CDL with tanker endorsement

Experience with track mounted equipment

Conditions of Employment: Must possess a valid Class "A" CDL driver's license with air brake endorsements OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employment.

Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check

Must pass a physical examination

Must be able to work overtime when requested

The essential functions of this position require the use of street sweeper, backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, dozer, track hoe etc ; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) issued by City of Denton that may include gloves, hard hat, safety goggles/eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and uniforms.
