Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) and the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB are leading a recruitment to significantly expand the number and variety of investigators across basic and population science and translational research efforts in cancer. Recruitment is for tenured and tenure-track faculty applicants with an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD at all academic ranks and includes academic appointment in one or more of 27 academic departments across the HSOM, several of which rank in the top 10 nationally.
Successful applicants will join The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the first eight Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1972, which has been continuously funded by the NCI since its inception 54 years ago. It is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in a four-state region. The O'Neal has many areas of research excellence and has placed an emphasis on developing and supporting team science focused on the most important questions in cancer biology and population science, with a premium placed on translating important discoveries to the more than 5,000 new cancer patients seen at the O'Neal each year.
The O'Neal has over 400 members conducting outstanding cancer research across four interdisciplinary scientific programs and is supported by a broad array of institutional shared resources that allow access to the most cutting-edge technologies. The O'Neal raises over $5M per year from the community that is entirely invested in pilot grants and research initiatives.
UAB is making a major investment in the future of biomedical discovery with a new, flagship research facility purpose-built to recruit and empower up to 80 principal investigators. This state-of-the-art building delivers highly flexible wet and dry laboratory space, integrated vivarium infrastructure, and intentionally designed adjacencies that catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations across cancer biology, immunology, and the neurosciences. Positioned at the center of campus and engineered for scale, the facility offers investigators an exceptional environment to build ambitious, well-funded research programs with global impact.
