Job TitleUnder general supervision, operates various types of power construction equipment, such as backhoe, loaders, rubber tire and steel wheel rollers, crack sealing machines and distributors used in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads and bridges by performing the following duties.Essential Job FunctionsOperate various pieces of heavy construction equipment or trucks on a regularly assigned basis; check for proper functioning of the equipment during operation and makes needed adjustments; perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including operation pre check for proper fluids and lubricant. Inform supervisor of repair needs or makes field repairs to equipment. May occasionally operate or train on equipment normally assigned to a higher or lower classification; perform labor duties as member of road/bridge crew as necessary. Perform other duties as assigned.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis job has no supervisory responsibilities.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to supervisors or employees of organization.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsValid Oklahoma Class B Commercial Driver's LicenseKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSkill - Skill in operating heavy construction equipment or trucks safely; in conforming to construction standards and specifications; and in making needed adjustments and preventative maintenance.Knowledge - Knowledge of functions, operating methods, limitations and care required on heavy equipment; of road/bridge; of hazards of heavy equipment operations; of traffic laws and regulations pertaining to equipment operated; of safety rules and equipment; and of departmental policies and procedures.Ability - Ability to detect needed equipment repairs and necessary adjustments; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to estimate and calculate materials needed; to read blueprints and grade stakes; to work independently; and to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor.Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
