Job description
Overview of Position:
The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia (LASEV), seeks a social worker dedicated to providing services to homeless veterans and veterans at risk of homelessness in our Hampton Roads service area. Founded in 1966, LASEV is a non-profit public interest law firm serving low-income clients in a variety of civil legal matters. Our mission is to promote the equal application of justice and remove impediments to fairness for the low-income and vulnerable families of eastern Virginia. We strive to both meet the individual legal needs of our clients and to challenge systemic injustice and the root causes of poverty and inequality. This grant funded position is within our Disability Rights Unit/Homeless Outreach Program (DRU/HOP) unit, located in our Norfolk office. This position works in partnership with a dedicated veterans attorney and reports to the Managing Attorney of DRU/HOP. A passion for justice and a commitment to poverty law is a must.
Key Responsibilities:
Regular outreach within the community, including the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, street outreach, homeless and domestic violence shelters, food pantries, libraries, and other locations serving homeless veterans and those at risk of homelessness as identified.
Manage a caseload of individual clients and maintain awareness of clients’ holistic needs.
Trauma informed case management and identification of and connection with services.
Assistance with housing stabilization, including assistance finding and obtaining housing and eviction prevention services.
Initiate and foster new relationships with local community service providers.
Provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution when necessary.
Complete medical summary reports for SSI/SSDI cases.
Work in partnership with dedicated veterans attorney on all cases.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of resources available for low-income individuals and households, especially for disabled, homeless, and/or veteran populations.
Ability to collaborate and work in partnership with a dedicated attorney and within a team of attorneys and support staff.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Commitment to poverty law and compassion to the issues of homelessness and low-income populations.
Adaptability and flexibility.
Creative thinking and problem solving skills.
Education & Experience:
Minimum: Bachelor of social work (BSW), mental health, or human services; or equivalent experience. MSW, Fully Licensed preferred.
Experience with social work, human services, mental health services, trauma informed care, and/or case management.
Experience working with homeless individuals or veterans preferred.
Salary & Benefits:
Annual salary: $60,000
Benefits: Excellent benefits package including health/dental/vision, disability and retirement benefits.
This position is full time (37.5 hours per week), exempt.
