About Sharing Excess

Sharing Excess is one of the fastest-growing food rescue organizations in America, built on a simple but powerful mission: save food and feed communities. What started as a student startup now operates hubs in Philadelphia, New York (Hunts Point), Chicago, and Detroit, redistributing surplus food at scale to reduce waste and close the meal gap.

Our work is fast-paced, human-centered, and deeply mission-driven. We move quickly, adapt constantly, and build systems that allow compassion to scale. We are looking for team members who bring both heart and rigor to their work and want to help build a strong, values-aligned organization from the inside out.

Role Overview

The HR Generalist, Recruiting owns hiring at Sharing Excess. You will run full-cycle recruitment across every hub and department, from warehouse and driver roles to program leadership, and make sure every candidate experiences our values from first contact to first day.

Recruiting is roughly 70% of this role. The other 30% is generalist work: you are a trained backup on core HR operations and step in when the team needs coverage, including onboarding, employee questions, HRIS updates, and compliance tasks. This is a role for a recruiter who wants to grow as an HR generalist, or a generalist who loves the hiring side of the work.

You will be part of a small, hands-on HR team led by the HR Manager and will partner closely with the Senior HR Generalist, Compliance & Payroll so hiring and onboarding hand off cleanly.

Core Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Recruitment (approx. 70%)

Own the hiring process end to end: intake meetings, job postings, sourcing, screening, interview scheduling, debriefs, references, and offers

Partner with hiring managers to define role needs, interview plans, and selection criteria before a role opens

Source candidates proactively through job boards, community partners, workforce programs, colleges, and referrals, with a focus on local talent in each hub

Manage high-volume hourly hiring for warehouse, driver, and operations roles alongside professional and leadership searches

Coach managers on structured, inclusive, and legally compliant interviewing

Maintain the applicant tracking system and keep candidates informed at every stage

Prepare offer letters in partnership with the HR Manager and hand new hires off smoothly to onboarding

Track and report recruiting metrics, including time to fill, pipeline health, source of hire, and offer acceptance

Keep the careers page and job postings current, and make sure our employer brand reflects our mission and culture

Support the annual hiring plan and keep open roles aligned with the approved hiring budget

Generalist Coverage (approx. 30%)

Step in as backup HR Generalist when the team needs coverage, including absences, peak periods, and special projects

Support new hire onboarding: paperwork, I-9 verification, orientation, and 30/60/90-day check-ins

Serve as a point of contact for employee HR questions and route sensitive or complex issues to the HR Manager

Keep employee records and HRIS data accurate

Assist with compliance tasks, including training tracking, postings, and audit preparation, in partnership with the Senior HR Generalist, Compliance & Payroll

Support offboarding, exit interviews, engagement surveys, and culture initiatives as needed

You'll Have

4+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, in-house or agency

Experience with both high-volume hourly hiring and professional or salaried searches

Working knowledge of HR operations, such as onboarding, I-9s, HRIS, and employee relations basics

Familiarity with employment law as it applies to hiring, including fair chance and pay transparency requirements

Experience with an applicant tracking system and HRIS

Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust quickly with candidates and managers

Strong organization, follow-through, and discretion with confidential information

Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to Sharing Excess hub locations as needed

It's Great If You Also Have

HR Generalist experience or a PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar certification

Experience recruiting in multiple states, especially PA, NY, IL, or MI

Nonprofit, food systems, logistics, or warehouse hiring experience

Bilingual skills, especially Spanish

You'll Be Successful If You

Treat every candidate like a future colleague, whether or not they get the job

Push hiring forward with urgency without cutting corners

Stay curious about the whole employee lifecycle, from first contact through long after the hire

Balance structure with flexibility as priorities shift

Care deeply about building systems that support people

Compensation

$60,000 to $75,000 per year, commensurate with experience and location.
