Job description

HS Math Teacher

The Algebra 1 Teacher provides high-quality, standards-aligned mathematics instruction designed to develop students' foundational algebraic knowledge, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and readiness for advanced mathematics coursework. The teacher plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates an effective Algebra 1 instructional program that meets the diverse academic needs of all students.

Qualifications

Qualified teacher with full State of Michigan Math endorsement.

Minimum of three years' successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of a core content area was an important responsibility for the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Effectively deliver instruction based on curriculum and content standards identified by the State of Michigan and Pontiac School District.

Integrate best practices using grade level content standards established by the State of Michigan for all core subjects during the school day and/or during structured, before/after school intervention programs.

Demonstrate a high level of skill in all aspects of instruction that accelerates the learning of struggling students.

Scaffold student learning so they are required to read, write, and think on a regular basis with the inclusion of before, during, and after strategies.

Promote highly specialized instruction in which struggling students thrive: instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated, and provides ample practice.

Develop a repertoire of assessment strategies consistent with instructional goals, teaching methods, and individual student needs to more accurately assess skills and understandings central to the content of core subjects including portfolios, demonstrations, journals, class critiques, use of rubrics and discussions.

Use ongoing assessments to maintain a record of student progress.

Regard assessment as a joint venture through which both student and teacher understanding is enhanced.

Create fair and equitable assessments to assess higher-order thinking and problem solving as well as individual skills, knowledge, and understandings.

Model good assessment processes that assist students in assessing their own work and the work of their peers.

Align core curriculum standards, instruction, and measures of learning.

Collaborate with other content teachers, special education teachers, parents, and students to provide strategies that may be used to enhance a student's skills.

Work cooperatively with building administrators to promote across the curriculum by providing professional development that targets research, strategies and modeling of instructional practices to support teachers in their implementation of core subjects in their curriculum area.

Provide recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors. Demonstrate the ability to supervise students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive.

Engage in on-going professional development to increase knowledge and skills in supporting Physical Education development for adolescent students and students who represent sub-group populations.

Implement strategies for instruction and teach strategies for student learning that increase knowledge and application in all content areas. Coordinate instruction across content and instructional.

Physical Requirements

Regular sitting, speaking, hearing, and use of hands. Occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
