Job description
Position: Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP)
Pay:
$70,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year
Summary: Kamps is looking to hire a Human Resources Business Partner for the West Region. This individual will be responsible for the daily HR functions for their assigned region, including recruiting, onboarding, training, employee relations, investigations, and unemployment claims, and will support benefits, leave, and workers’ compensation administration. The HRBP serves as the primary HR contact for plant management and employees, coaching managers on sound, legally compliant practices and resolving work-related issues in a professional and timely manner. Success in this role depends on building strong relationships with Operations, following through quickly, and earning credibility early. Because high turnover is common in our industry, recruiting is also an ongoing focus of this role.
Travel: Regular travel to plant locations during the first 90 days, moving to an as-needed schedule over time, with each plant visited at least twice per year. The ideal candidate will be located near at least one plant in the region, with easy access to an airport. Additional travel may be needed for investigations or special events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Relationship Building and Customer Service
Build strong, trusting relationships with plant managers and supervisors through regular site visits early in the role and consistent communication over time.
Provide responsive, customer-focused HR support to managers and employees, keeping them informed and following through on each request until it is resolved.
Recognize that the people we serve are often on the plant floor rather than at a desk; pick up the phone or meet in person to resolve issues efficiently instead of relying on email alone.
Be solution-oriented: bring a recommendation, not just the problem, and **escalate** high-risk matters promptly with the relevant facts, risks, and proposed next steps.
Notice patterns across sites, such as repeat issues, turnover trends, or manager risk, and proactively recommend improvements.
Recruiting and Onboarding
Lead full-cycle recruiting on a continuous basis, including sourcing, screening, interviewing, and hiring, while keeping candidates and hiring managers informed throughout the process.
Partner with plant managers to understand staffing needs and the skills required for each opening and proactively address vacancies.
Administer new hire orientation and onboarding as needed and review new hire and safety packets for accuracy and completeness before filing them according to company policy.
Monitor outstanding onboarding tasks in Workday, follow up to ensure completion, and **escalate** as appropriate.
Employee Relations, Investigations, and Coaching
Navigate complex employee relations situations with sound judgement, discretion, and emotional intelligence.
Conduct timely, thorough, and objective workplace investigations, including interviews with all relevant witnesses; document findings, recommend appropriate action, and follow through to resolution.
Coach and train managers and supervisors on employee relations, discipline, communication, company policy, and employment law, recommending legally sound practices that protect the company from unnecessary risk.
Administer disciplinary and counseling actions and terminations consistent with company policy, ensuring all documentation is complete and properly filed.
Unemployment Claims
Manage unemployment claims from start to finish; respond within required deadlines, gather and submit supporting documentation, prepare company witnesses for hearings, and represent the company before the hearing officer.
Benefits, Leave, and Workers’ Compensation
Partner with the Benefits and Leave Specialist and Workers’ Compensation Manager on benefits, leave, and workers’ compensation matters, including advising management on return to work under FMLA, ADA, workers’ compensation, and state law; serve as backup when needed.
Communicate with employees on leave or recovering from illness or injury, keeping them informed throughout the process.
Answer general benefits and leave questions, routing specific cases to the Benefits and Leave Specialist.
HR Support and Systems
Respond to HR ticket system requests in a timely manner, keep the requester updated on the progress of their questions/request, and close each ticket once it is resolved.
Maintain accurate employee records and file all documentation according to corporate policy.
Serve as a liaison between employees and other departments, such as Payroll, IT, and Accounting, connecting questions with appropriate party and following up to confirm they are resolved.
Prepare presentations and present HR information to a variety of audiences, from plant employees to senior leadership.
Compliance and Safety
Ensure Form I-9 compliance, including conducting regular I‑9 audits and following E‑Verify requirements where applicable.
Ensure compliance with corporate policy, fair employment practices, and federal, state, and local employment laws; review local plant practices and recommend improvements.
In partnership with the Safety Department, guide operating managers on accident investigations and injury reporting.
This list of duties is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities that senior management may deem necessary.
Skills and Qualifications:
At least 5 years of professional human resources experience is preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred; SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP a plus.
Bilingual in English and Spanish, strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and representing an employer in unemployment hearings.
Thorough knowledge of employment‑related laws and regulations, and working knowledge of benefits, leave, and workers’ compensation administration, including FMLA, ADA, and state leave laws.
Strong customer service orientation, with a commitment to timely, reliable follow‑through.
Socially confident relationship builder who takes initiative to connect with people at all levels of the organization.
Strong emotional awareness with the ability to read situations and stay composed in difficult conversations.
Highly organized and detail‑oriented, with the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and pivot as priorities change.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience in, or a genuine interest in, the manufacturing industry.
Strong technical skills, including Microsoft Office and HRIS platforms; Workday experience a plus.
Collaborative team player who acts with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Work is performed primarily from a home office, with time spent in plant offices and on manufacturing floors during site visits. Our plants are loud, active environments, and personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required.
