Phlebotomist PositionPhlebotomist Position DescriptionQualificationsMust possess a current phlebotomy certification by the state of CaliforniaProof of certification is required prior to in-processing and at each renewalContinuing education requirements must be maintained and documented annuallyDemonstrated technical proficiency in phlebotomy skills necessary to meet Government requirementsAbility to speak, read, write, and understand English fluentlyMust comply with VA Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations governing staff conductPosition OverviewThe Phlebotomist provides onsite medical laboratory support services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the Fresno VA Medical Center, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service.Standards of CareProvide care supporting both routine and STAT testingPerform specimen collection and handling for:BloodUrineOther body fluidsSupport laboratory functions including:Clinical chemistryHistologyToxicologyImmunologyCoagulationHematologyUrinalysisMicrobiologyScope of DutiesCollect, transport, process, and evaluate specimens for testingEnsure proper specimen handling, including:Receiving and accessioning specimensDelivering specimens to appropriate lab sectionsStoring specimens in accordance with protocolPerform both routine and STAT specimen collection procedures within scope of practicePatient Safety and ComplianceAdhere to all patient safety and infection control standardsTake all necessary precautions to prevent:Patient fallsInjury due to error or omissionImmediately report all patient safety incidents using VA-approved reporting systemsSubmit incident reports and provide documentation to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR)Participate in follow-up actions as required by VA policyMaintain compliance with CDC and VA infection control guidelinesWork LocationServices are performed onsite at: Fresno VA Medical Center Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service 2615 E.
