Reports To: Fleet Manager or Maintenance Supervisor
Location: Panama City, FL
Position Summary:
The Lead Diesel Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and inspection of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This role provides hands-on technical expertise while supervising a team of mechanics to ensure all fleet operations run efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The Lead Diesel Mechanic plays a key leadership role in scheduling repairs, diagnosing complex issues, mentoring junior technicians, and maintaining high-quality service standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and coordinate the daily activities of diesel mechanics and service technicians.
Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulics, and other mechanical components.
Perform preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules.
Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software (Cummins, Tech Tool, J Pro etc.).
Maintain accurate repair and maintenance records using fleet management systems.
Order parts and manage inventory levels to minimize downtime.
Ensure all repairs meet safety and environmental standards and follow OSHA and DOT regulations.
Train, mentor, and evaluate mechanic team members to promote skill development and high performance.
Communicate effectively with management regarding vehicle status, repair needs, and work progress.
Assist in developing maintenance policies and procedures to improve efficiency and reliability.
Participate in the hiring and onboarding of new maintenance staff when required.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational certification in diesel technology preferred.
Minimum 5–8 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role .
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and diagnostic equipment.
Proficient in using repair tools, diagnostic software, and fleet management systems.
Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred or ability to obtain one.
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or OEM certifications a plus.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights or weekends, when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and perform manual labor as required.
Work in various environments including indoors, outdoors, and under vehicles.
Stand, kneel, bend, and operate tools or machinery for extended periods.
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a shop or garage setting, with occasional field service work. Safety equipment and adherence to company safety protocols are mandatory.
