Job description

Responsibilities

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to support nuclear plant modification and engineering projects at the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center. The role will require approximately two to three days on-site each week at CCCEC, with the flexibility to work remotely the other days.

The successful candidate will provide senior-level mechanical engineering direction, coordinate multidisciplinary activities, and serve as a key technical interface among Sargent & Lundy, Constellation, CCCEC station personnel, vendors, and project stakeholders.

The role will support mechanical system evaluations, plant modifications, Engineering Change packages, calculations, studies, equipment and piping design, specifications, design reviews, field walkdowns, and implementation support. The engineer will also contribute to project execution by managing assigned scope, budget, schedule, deliverables, risks, and technical interfaces.

Responsibilities:

Lead or support mechanical engineering activities for nuclear plant modifications and related projects at CCCEC.

Develop and review mechanical design inputs, calculations, evaluations, studies, reports, drawings, specifications, and implementation documentation.

Support engineering for mechanical systems and equipment, including pumps, piping, heat exchangers, HVAC, balance-of-plant systems, supports, and mechanical interfaces, as assigned.

Prepare and review Engineering Change packages and related conceptual, detailed, and implementation-phase deliverables.

Evaluate system performance, equipment impacts, operating conditions, design requirements, and mechanical interfaces associated with plant modifications and power uprate activities.

Review vendor drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment data, and other technical submittals; identify missing information and follow up on required vendor inputs.

Participate in project kickoff meetings, technical focus meetings, design reviews, milestone reviews, field walkdowns, constructability reviews, comment-resolution meetings, and client coordination meetings.

Coordinate mechanical interfaces with electrical, I&C, structural, civil, fire protection, licensing, procurement, construction, operations, and other disciplines.

Support installation, testing, startup, outage, and implementation activities, including development or review of implementation and testing documentation.

Serve as a technical liaison with Constellation and CCCEC personnel and communicate technical issues, assumptions, decisions, risks, and required actions clearly and promptly.

Develop mechanical input to multidisciplinary budgets, schedules, work plans, proposals, and resource plans.

Monitor assigned scope, budget, schedule, progress, and deliverable status; identify trends early and elevate risks before commitments are affected.

Support project controls and change management, including evaluation of scope growth, schedule impacts, budget impacts, and changes to technical requirements.

Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable Sargent & Lundy procedures, client procedures, quality requirements, codes, standards, and project instructions.

Support client presentations, proposal development, technical discussions, and identification of follow-on engineering opportunities.

Other Opportunities Provided:

The opportunity to work on challenging nuclear power projects with experienced engineers and project professionals.

A multidisciplinary environment that supports technical growth, collaboration, and professional development.

The opportunity to contribute to projects that support safe, reliable, and carbon-free energy.

A hybrid work arrangement that combines remote flexibility with regular onsite collaboration at CCCEC.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.

Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible mechanical engineering and project experience.

Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating mechanical engineering work for complex industrial, utility, power-generation, or nuclear projects.

Experience developing or reviewing mechanical calculations, evaluations, drawings, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.

Experience coordinating technical work across multiple disciplines and managing interfaces among engineering, design, procurement, vendors, construction, operations, and client organizations.

Experience with project planning, task budgeting, schedule development or monitoring, progress reporting, change management, and risk identification.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate technical information clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Ability to work independently, exercise sound engineering judgment, and prioritize competing technical and project requirements.

Ability to work onsite at CCCEC two to three days per week and remotely the remaning days.

Ability to obtain and maintain required site access, training, and qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration or the ability to obtain registration. Registration may be required for assigned work in accordance with applicable requirements.

Experience supporting operating nuclear power plants, nuclear plant modifications, engineering changes, power uprates, reliability projects, outage work, or licensing-related engineering.

Familiarity with Constellation or utility engineering processes, including design change, configuration management, document control, quality assurance, and station work-control practices.

Experience with mechanical systems, balance-of-plant systems, pumps, heat exchangers, piping, HVAC, equipment replacement, or mechanical/structural interfaces.

Experience coordinating vendor engineering, procurement specifications, bid evaluations, vendor document reviews, and supplier technical questions.

Familiarity with applicable nuclear industry codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and quality-assurance practices.
