They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.Essential Functions:Maintains safe swimming conditions and constant surveillance of the pools with water depths listed on the certificationKnows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as requiredMaintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staffKnows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areaMaintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department codePerforms equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as neededChecks the pool for hazardous conditions when arrivingPerforms chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate actionPerforms all maintenance and cleaning duties as assignedAttends all staff meetings and training as requiredAdheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practicesPerforms and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associatedAssist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisorRequirements:YMCA CAUSE DRIVEN LEADER COMPETENCIES:Functional ExpertiseCommunication & InfluenceDeveloping Self & OthersQualifications:YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certificationCurrent ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one yearAbility to maintain a certification-level of physical and mental readinessMust demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standardsMaintain all required certifications and trainingsMinimum age of 16. Guidelines must be followed regarding lifeguards aged 16-17 years working in the pool area.Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:This position operates in an aquatic, recreational, and community-based environment and regularly interacts with participants, children, families, team members, leaders, and other stakeholders. The role requires the ability to instruct and observe participants while demonstrating proper swimming and stroke techniques. The employee must be able to stand for prolonged periods, lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and lift or assist a small to average-sized child as needed. The position requires the physical ability to safely demonstrate aquatic skills and perform the essential functions associated with teaching swim lessons. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and may involve exposure to humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions. The role also requires the ability to maintain attention and communicate effectively in a loud and active aquatic environment.The YMCA of South Hampton Roads provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities to enable them to perform the essential functions of the position, consistent with applicable law.Accountability:Employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and successful completion and maintenance of applicable position requirements, which may include background screening, driver's license review, CPS screening, drug and/or alcohol testing, or other screenings as required by the position or applicable law.Compensation & Benefits:Wage Range: $13.50 - $14.00 hourlyThe wage range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads' good-faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting salary for this position.
