Job description
Lifeguard PositionMaintain order and safety in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers.Qualifications, Certifications and ExperiencePre-Employment Certifications(Responsibility of the EMPLOYEE to earn and maintain; cost of certification and time spent on the certification are not covered by the employer)Current Lifeguard certification (American Red Cross preferred, Others as approved by CE Aquatic Coordinator – must convert to ARC within 1 year of hire date)Current First Aid and CPR-PR Certification (American Red Cross preferred, Others as approved by CE Aquatic Coordinator – must convert to ARC within 1 year of hire date)Certifications Obtainable upon Employment(Complete within 2 weeks of hire and prior to first scheduled shift; cost of certification and time spent on the certification are covered by the employer)Trainings required by the Johnston Community School DistrictTrainings required by Community EducationExperienceMust be at least 16 years oldARC Water Safety instructor (WSI) certification preferredPerformance CriteriaProfessionalEnsure the safety of all patrons in and around the poolKnow and enforce pool rules and regulationsUnderstand and execute pool emergency procedureInspect facilities for cleanliness and safety, take action as necessaryComplete all necessary preventative and regular maintenance, counts, pool checks as assignedEnsure that safety equipment is present and at each guard stationRescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administer basic first aid when necessary to stabilize victim until emergency medical service can respondAttend all assigned meetings and in-servicesPerform other such duties and function as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this positionPersonalJohnston Community Education employees are expected to:Contribute to creating a positive work environment by being engaged and serving as a positive role model/representative of the department/district.Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, parents, community members and participants of all ages.Demonstrate initiative and the ability to follow direction with minimal supervision.Maintain confidentiality, demonstrate integrity and be respectful of others.Handle multiple tasks as assigned or job requires and complete work in a timely manner.Follow and enforce district/department/program policies and procedures.Display dependability, being on-time and present during scheduled work, being accountable for work productivity and actions.Communicate effectively both in writing and orally through clear speaking and listening skills.Possess appropriate levels of enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patience.Control their setting as needed to ensure quality program implementation.Focus on their environment, anticipating and understanding protocol in regards to safety of participants.Provide instruction/leadership/management of program implementation related to specific job responsibilities.Perform light to moderate manual labor to assist with implementation of program.Demonstrate ability to grasp and adjust to new and changing situations.GeneralWork location will be assigned as neededWork days/hours may vary depending upon program needsPrimary location is Johnston Community School District facilities and program-specificPerforms other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher-level leadershipPerformance evaluation conducted by direct supervisor
