Light Equipment and Auto Mechanic

Are you someone who loves working under the hood and takes pride in keeping vehicles running smoothly? The City of Wilmington is looking for a skilled and motivated Light Equipment and Auto Mechanic to join our team!

In this role, you'll perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of City vehicles — from Police vehicles and SUVs to light-duty trucks that help keep our organization moving every day.

You'll have the opportunity to use your mechanical know-how, work with a supportive team, and make a real difference in keeping essential city operations running safely and efficiently!

Typical Tasks

What You'll Do

Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and tire services.

Diagnose and repair brakes, engines, transmissions, drivelines, steering, suspension, and electrical systems.

Conduct safety inspections of emergency and safety equipment, and ensure all vehicles meet operational standards.

Complete roadside service calls for City vehicles as needed.

Assist with shop organization and upkeep, including cleaning and maintaining tools and work areas.

Pick up parts from vendors and assist with vehicle preparation for surplus.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: Six-months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school or GED education

Experience: Three (3) years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education or experience.

Other Requirements:

Current Auto Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.

Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain within one year of hire.

NC State Inspection License, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

NC State Emission License, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Forklift License, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.

Must be able to read, understand, and follow technical manuals

Must be knowledgeable in maintenance of commercial vehicles. Training and experience with Ford and Dodge preferred

If a candidate does not possess the required certification or license at the time of hire but obtains it at their own expense within the specified timeframe, they will be eligible for reimbursement of the certification or license cost after providing proof of successful completion.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands: Exerting up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs frequently; or up to 10-20 ibs constantly.

Working Conditions: This position will primarily work in a shop setting.

Benefits

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.

Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement - NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to a 401(k) plan regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the 401(k) or 457 deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.

Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):

Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year

Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.

Holidays - 13 paid holidays annually

Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA). Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.

Note: The City of Wilmington is on a bi-weekly pay cycle. New employees should expect to receive their first paycheck approximately 4 weeks after their start date.
