Job description
School Counselor (Grades K-4)
Counsel with students in the building for the purpose of helping students to better understand themselves and develop their talents to their maximum potential and gain in emotional and social maturity and vocational awareness.
Serve first and foremost as a "child advocate." Encourage students to evaluate alternatives, formulate realistic goals and become increasingly self-directive; help students understand themselves and enhance positive self-concept. Maintain acceptable positive relationship with students and respects their confidences. Maintain confidential records for each student recording data and subject of each conference and other pertinent data. Provide an orientation program for all students new to the building. Instruct students in peer relationships, identification, appropriate expression of feelings, self-knowledge, self-esteem appropriate for K-4. Serve on building Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) team and building committees. Provide preventative guidance materials and/or activities for classrooms. Provide individual and small group counseling on an as needed basis. Assist with kindergarten parent orientation and assessment. Recognize and take appropriate action to modify student behavior patterns. Consult with parents and school staff about student's attendance and academic or social concerns. Maintain liaison with homes and community agencies. Interpret and analyze assessment information data for proficiency and group testing programs. Encourage an atmosphere of emotional security and personal growth for students. Coordinate programs from related outside agencies. Assist with transition activities for students at all grade levels. Assist with transportation for parents and students to counseling, doctor appointments and special events as needed. Arrange for and provide parent education/support groups as needed. Respond immediately to crisis situations (incidents of abuse, divorce, school avoidance). Coordinate and facilitates team meetings as necessary.

Ensure that decisions are based on data. Demonstrate flexibility and openness to innovation in the performance of job related duties. Serve as a role model in how to conduct oneself as a citizen and as a responsible, intelligent human being. Adhere to and enforce all board policies. Perform other tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor. The employee shall remain free from any alcohol or abuse of a non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions. Occasional interaction among unruly children.
