Job description
Maintenance Technician (Trails)
The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician (Trails). This job class maintains and makes repairs for the City of Richmond's parks, specialized equipment, and facilities through the performance of skilled labor and technical work. Incumbents will serve as crew members under the guidance of Labor Crew Chief and Tech Senior. Work may include assessing and identifying repair needs and recommending action; providing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned light and heavy equipment, machinery, or shop equipment; maintaining records and inventory; recommending equipment and supply purchases; maintaining cleanliness of work areas, tools, and equipment; ensuring safe use of hazardous materials and chemicals; adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Operating heavy equipment, power and hand tools
Park maintenance may include mowing, weed eating, table, bench and shelter repairs, and maintenance, ball field maintenance, snow removal, fence repair and installation, general landscaping, trail construction and maintenance, volunteer coordination, tree care, sawyer work, rigging, truck and trailer hauling, trash, litter and recycling removal, and basic carpentry
Facilities maintenance including cleaning, repairs, and painting
Determining repairs necessary on faulty equipment and making repairs as needed or notifying proper maintenance personnel to handle repairs
Assisting maintenance personnel in other classifications, such as plumbers and electricians, in performing their duties
Preparing and presenting reports, maintaining work order logs
Assisting park guests with a friendly presence, useful information, recommendations for recreation and navigation
Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED or specialized vocational training
Two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1 year work experience in parks and/or community facilities or related field
Experience with community/volunteer engagement
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Some assignments may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
Knowledge (some combination of the following):
Basic math
Basic/standard repairs and maintenance applications
Chemicals and their commercial and industrial applications
Commercial mowing equipment
Machine safety procedures, including "lock-out tag-out"
Specific knowledge related to area of responsibility such as paint applications, paint removal, application of dry wall, playground safety, playground inspection, etc.
Variety of hand and power tools needed for various circumstances
Usage and safe operation of various equipment and tools
Various plants and fauna for safety reasons
Mechanics
Skills (some combination of the following):
Breaking down and rebuilding equipment
Cleaning area of responsibility
Communicating with various internal and external departments
Conducting snow removal
Ensuring equipment is in safe working order, cleaned, and well maintained
Leading a crew and keeping them safe
Mixing and pouring concrete properly if area of focus
Navigating work area
Performing minor repairs and replacing damaged equipment
Performing routine or heavy cleaning
Reading a tape measure and a diagram
Reading and writing
Setting up and assisting with special events
Using and operating equipment such as tractors, backhoes, hand tools, power tools, weed eaters, dump trucks, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
