Job description

Maintenance Worker IUnder immediate or general supervision performs a variety of basic maintenance, janitorial or landscaping duties in one of the City's Maintenance Divisions. Maintenance Workers I perform routine labor; basic repair and construction; grounds maintenance and basic landscaping; and general building cleaning. Work is completed by following clear written instructions and/or supervision. The more routine assignments can be accomplished with general supervision from directions. More skilled duties and responsibilities are performed in a training capacity as a member of a crew under the close supervision of a more experienced employee.About the Position The Public Works Department has openings for 2 temporary Maintenance Worker I positions in the Stormwater/Wastewater Operations Work Unit. This position requires a CDL. The minimum is a Class B CDL, Class A preferred. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2026 These temporary positions will last no more than 9 months. Only electronic applications are accepted.Essential Functions The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property. Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities. Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment. Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand/power tools; and other basic street maintenance. Drives pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper. Assists with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs. Assists in digging ditches and laying sewer/water/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and maintenance hole and pavement repairs. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.Typical Qualifications Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques. Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions. Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work as a member of a crew. Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately. Experience/Education One year's general work experience required. Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred. Some positions may require the employee obtain special certification (such as Pesticide Applicators card or CDL) within timelines specified by the State of Washington or the City of Olympia. Special Requirement Some positions may require a valid Washington State Drivers' License or Commercial Driver's License.Supplemental Information Contacts Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination. City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens. It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience. If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance. Supervision None. Accountability The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner. Working Conditions (Working conditions will vary by assignment.) Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools. Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
