Job description
The PositionThis is a continuous filing exam. The next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on: 5/29/2026, 8/28/2026, 11/30/2026. Under close supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks with the maintenance of County roads and related infrastructures, drainage systems, pipeline systems, solid waste management facilities, wastewater systems, landscaped areas, and other related facilities. Note: Vacancies may be full-time or intermittent.Examples of Knowledge and AbilitiesKnowledge of common hand tools. Ability to learn to perform a variety of manual tasks related to assigned duties, follow oral and written instructions, maintain courteous and effective relationships with co-workers and the public, read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.Employment QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: There are no education or experience requirements for this class. Special Requirements: Physical Requirements: In some positions incumbents will be required to perform heavy manual labor which may include such tasks as digging ditches; lifting and carrying of materials including, but not limited to cement bags, sewer pipe, and sign posts; frequent walking and/or standing, carrying or throwing shovelfuls of paving material; working outdoors in all types of local weather conditions. License Required: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, is required prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid License may constitute cause for termination from this class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Minimum Age: 18 years. Special Access: Some positions require the ability to maintain an Airport Security Badge allowing access to secure County Airport locations. Background Check: Some positions in this class must pass an employment history/access investigation and possibly a criminal history record check in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration Regulations and Sacramento County Policies and Procedures. Such preference shall apply, provided the veteran has first achieved a minimum passing score in the examination. The passing score of a veteran shall be annotated to indicate the veteran's score shall be regarded as 5 points or higher, OR 10 points higher for disabled veterans, only for the purpose of determining the three ranks along with which the veteran's name shall be certified. No score shall actually be changed and no new rank shall be created as a result of application of veteran's preference for certification purposes."Disabled Veteran" means any veteran who has served during wartime and, who, as of the final filing date for an examination is declared by the United States Veterans Administration or military service department to be 10% or more disabled as a result of his/her military service. Persons claiming eligibility for disabled veteran's preference must submit to the employment office, on or before the application deadline date, a certification from the United States Veterans Administration or a military service department, dated within 1 year, which certifies the present existence of a service related disability of 10% or more, or other acceptable proof of such disability as a result of his/her military service.
