Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Ocean Technology Group (OTG), located at the University of Hawai'i (UH) Marine Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,750 - $6,000/Mon.

DUTIES: Provides technical and logistical support for all cruise-related activities of SOEST research vessels. Assumes major responsibilities for seagoing instrumentation and systems. Operates, maintains, and repairs Ocean Technology Group (OTG) shared-use shipboard oceanographic instruments, navigation and communication systems, and computer, network, data acquisition, and operating systems. Manages calibration and maintenance schedules for oceanographic instrumentation and laboratory equipment. Designs, constructs, and troubleshoots new electronic and mechanical systems; modifies existing systems to meet changing needs. Repairs both mechanical and electrical equipment as needed. Oversees cruise mobilization and demobilization efforts primarily involving OTG oceanographic and laboratory equipment. Serves as lead technician and trains visiting scientists and junior marine technicians in the correct operation of shared-use shipboard oceanographic instruments. Requires spending extended periods at sea, typically 120 to 150 days per year in 20 to 60 day rotations, teamed with peers. Drives a variety of vehicles to transport/move gear and equipment. Worldwide travel is required.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine, Physical, or Engineering Science. (Combination of technical schooling and relevant job experience may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree.).

EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience in the areas listed above. Progression job with minimum experience requirements for Level I, and combination of experience and demonstrated competence and abilities for Levels II, III, and Senior. It will assume the employee to start at Level I. Experience including significant work in the areas of installation, maintenance, and operation of shipboard research equipment, research instruments, and support systems. Experience with troubleshooting computer systems (program and system level) and hardware (PC/Windows, UNIX/Linux). Experience with data acquisition systems.

KNOWLEDGE: Good working knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic systems. Working knowledge of electronics, electronic systems, and associated testing hardware (e.g., multimeters and scopes). Working knowledge and ability to work with synthetic lines, wire rope, cranes, winches, blocks, and capstans. Computer literacy in terms of computer programming, such as C, C++, or script languages such as PERL, Awk (for Level I, computer literacy is not required but must be able to obtain on the job).

ABILITIES & SKILLS: Mechanical skills and aptitude, skills in the use of hand and power tools. Demonstrated ability using electronic test tools to troubleshoot analog and electronic circuitry. Must have good verbal and written communications skills. Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment (e.g., winches, cranes, capstans, and blocks). Ability to obtain a valid passport and international travel visas. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition : Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete forklift operator's certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Able to lift and carry equipment weighing at least fifty (50) pounds assisted. Must be able to lift, carry, and move moderately heavy equipment. Must be able to work aloft and in confined spaces, and be able to climb ladders aboard seagoing vessels. Medical and physical fitness must be adequate for working continuously at sea for up to sixty (60) days. Post Offer/Employment Condition : Must be able to obtain and maintain medical clearance to work on University of Hawai'i (UH) research vessels or other appropriate vessels and maintain throughout duration of employment.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai'i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Electrical Engineering. Knowledge of and experience with commonly-used oceanographic instrumentation and shipboard equipment. Experience in scientific and troubleshooting operations at sea, preferably aboard University of Hawai'i research vessels. Knowledge of and experience with instrumentation operated by OTG. Experience in shipboard over-the-side operations and recovery of equipment or instrumentation. Skilled in the use of standard working knots and in the use of hauling equipment such as horizontal/vertical capstan and winches. Scientific diving certification. Experience with training marine technicians in shipboard operations. Background in sonar, multibeam, and sound sources. Mechanical knowledge, such as hydraulics. Awareness of International Labor Organization (ISO)/Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) rules governing weight handling equipment, and of regulations regarding the handling and disposal of hazardous and radioactive materials.
