Job description
Position Summary
The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing production sheet metal products and equipment in a heavy industrial/shipyard environment. Work is performed in accordance with blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications while maintaining strict compliance with OSHA safety standards.
This role requires precision craftsmanship, equipment operation experience, and the ability to work in physically demanding conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications
Perform sheet metal layout and measurements
Set up and operate sheet metal fabrication equipment (brakes, shears, rollers, presses)
Shape metal over anvils, blocks, and forms
Operate welding and soldering equipment
Fabricate and assemble sheet metal components to required tolerances
Install fabricated products such as control boxes, drain pipes, ventilators, and furnace casings
Inspect assemblies and installations for conformance to specifications
Monitor and verify quality using statistical process control methods
Follow all site safety procedures and OSHA regulations
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum 1 year of sheet metal fabrication or installation experience
Experience operating sheet metal machinery
Proficiency in blueprint reading and layout work
Welding and soldering experience
Ability to measure and work within close tolerances
Strong attention to detail and safety compliance
Required OSHA Training & Compliance
Candidates must be trained and compliant with:
Confined Space (29 CFR 1915 Subpart B)
Hazard Communication (29 CFR / )
Respirator Training & Medical Clearance (29 CFR )
Fall Protection (29 CFR , , , )
PPE Training (29 CFR 1915 Subpart I)
Hearing Conservation (29 CFR )
Audiometric testing documentation
Hexavalent Chromium medical clearance
Required PPE - Charleston Location
Daily use of required PPE includes:
MSA Comfo Classic Half/Full Face Respirator or approved equivalent
Fall protection harness and lifeline systems
White hard hat (properly labeled)
Welding shield
Muff-style hearing protection
ANSI Z87 safety glasses
8" safety boots or leather safety shoes with spats
Flame-resistant coveralls
Welding jacket and leather bib
Work Environment
Heavy industrial/shipyard setting
Physically demanding work
Exposure to temperature and humidity extremes
Work at heights and in confined spaces
Daily respirator use may be required
