Job description

Mechanic

The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a fleet of heavy equipment and transportation assets to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and safety. This role supports a diverse fleet that includes forklifts ranging from 6,000 lb. capacity to Versa Lift 100/140k units, diesel tractors (Kenworth, International, and Freightliner), and trailers such as Landoll, RGN, and flatbed configurations. This role plays a critical part in minimizing equipment downtime, supporting operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. Depending on operational needs, the Mechanic may specialize in diesel, industrial, or material-handling equipment while demonstrating versatility across all assigned machinery.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform mid-level mechanical maintenance and repair on diesel trucks, trailers, forklifts, and rental lift equipment, including preventive maintenance, brake systems, and hydraulic systems.

Complete all scheduled preventive maintenance accurately and on time.

Inspect returned equipment promptly, initiate required repairs, and ensure renter-caused damage is documented and billed within 24 hours of check-in.

Troubleshoot mechanical issues using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment; perform repairs and coordinate outside vendors for complex or specialized work as needed.

Schedule and prioritize maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and support safe, timely equipment availability.

Verify equipment performance through operational testing, test drives, and inspection of hydraulic, electrical, and control systems before returning units to service.

Support high preventive maintenance standards (90% on-time PM completion) and assist in returning out-of-service (OOS) units to operation as quickly and safely as possible.

Maintain fleet and rental equipment in excellent working condition and professional appearance.

Perform annual equipment certifications and DOT inspections in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Accurately document inspections, services, and repairs in FC&C software.

Collaborate with operators and shop teammates to diagnose unexpected breakdowns and coordinate timely repairs.

Manage maintenance cost by using warranty coverage and evaluating parts/service options.

Maintain parts and shop supply inventory, place orders as needed and follow purchasing procedures for proper billing.

Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and pride in workmanship; maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area daily.

Follow all company safety policies and ensure work is performed in compliance with OSHA and DOT standards.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; additional technical or vocational training in diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment mechanics is preferred.

Two to five (2–5) years of experience as a fleet or heavy equipment mechanic, with hands-on experience maintaining and repairing diesel vehicles, trailers, and/or material-handling or rental equipment.

At least one (1) year of experience interpreting and working with hydraulic systems and wiring diagrams on heavy equipment and vehicles, including diagnostics and repair.

Minimum of one (1) year of intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

ASE, OEM, or manufacturer certifications (e.g., diesel, hydraulics, electrical systems, forklift or lift equipment) preferred.

Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations.

Experience with fleet maintenance software or computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS); experience with FC&C or similar systems a plus.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The Mechanic will primarily work in a mechanical shop environment that may or may not be climate controlled. Possible exposure to low-lit areas or high levels of noise. Some work in outdoor environments with exposure to inclement weather; may access work via rough or uneven terrain. Performance of work will require General Physical Activities – actions that necessitate the frequent use of hands, arms, legs, and moving the entire body; will climb, crouch/stoop, bend or balance as needed, and will handle, move, or lift objects of varying weights or shapes up to 50 pounds. Frequent use of the senses involving speech, sight, sound, and touch.

Additional Requirements:

Work with a Top-of-Mind Awareness for the safety of yourself and everyone at the job site. Must be able to work in a high functioning team environment. Display the highest levels of honesty, integrity, and professionalism. Take pride in your work and in the company. Communicate openly and strive for peak performance in daily tasks. Know and deliver the quality service our customers have come to expect.
