Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE :
Keep District vehicles and small engines in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education :
High School Diploma or GED
Clear and valid Texas driver license
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
Acceptable driving record
Ability to operate bus
Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to prepare written reports that are a necessary function of this assignment
Possess at least a Class C Texas driver's license and qualify for insurance with the district insurance carrier
Experience:
Three to five years of experience in small engine repair
Five years of experience as a vehicle/auto mechanic
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Maintenance and Repairs
Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles
Perform minor mechanical repairs
Do welding and minor bodywork
Service vehicles according to an established preventive maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels
Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance
Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed
Demonstrate process of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to mechanic helpers
Perform preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules
Install GPS devices in District vehicles
Maintain records of fuel consumption and deliveries. Check fuel levels daily to facilitate timely ordering
Safety Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
Other Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
Work irregular hours as needed.
Performed other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used : Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles.
Posture : Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion : Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
Lifting : Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
Environment : Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district-wide travel; exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
