Mechanic I (Contract-to-Hire) Location: Orangeburg, SC Pay Rate: $17-$19/hour Schedule: 30 Hours Per Week Duration: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire Position Overview The City of Orangeburg is seeking a dependable and mechanically inclined Mechanic I to join its fleet maintenance team on a contract-to-hire basis. This role is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and basic repairs on a variety of City-owned vehicles and equipment. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, follows safety guidelines, and is eager to develop their mechanical skills in a municipal environment. Key Responsibilities • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on City vehicles and equipment. • Inspect engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and other mechanical components to identify issues. • Conduct diagnostic testing and troubleshoot mechanical problems. • Replace fluids, lubricate components, and perform preventative maintenance services. • Assist with repairs to machinery, vehicles, and equipment to ensure reliable operation. • Maintain accurate service and repair records. • Operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance machinery safely. • Follow all workplace safety procedures and regulations. • Assist with additional maintenance projects such as hydraulic repairs, vehicle painting, and equipment upkeep as needed. Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and vendors regarding repair needs and project status.
Skills and Requirements
Qualifications • High School Diploma or GED required. • Vocational training or coursework in automotive repair, diesel mechanics, or a related field preferred. • 0-1 years of mechanical maintenance or vehicle repair experience. • Basic understanding of vehicle systems, engines, and preventative maintenance practices. • Ability to diagnose and solve mechanical issues under supervision. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working on fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, or municipal equipment. • Familiarity with hydraulic, electrical, or diesel systems. • Possession of a valid South Carolina CDL or ability to obtain one. Physical Requirements • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in various positions for extended periods. • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds regularly. Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to weather conditions, noise, dust, machinery, and vehicle exhaust.
