Job description

Mechanical Engineer (Mission Critical) – Renowned MEP Firm, New York

About the firm

Our client is an established, principal-led architecture, engineering and interior design firm with more than 35 years in practice and offices in New York and Pennsylvania. Its principals stay hands-on in every project, from planning and design through to completion.

Healthcare is one of the firm's core markets. It delivers MEP engineering for some of the largest health systems in the Northeast, with client relationships going back more than 20 years, across hospitals, ambulatory centers, ICUs and specialist clinical suites.

The firm also works in mission critical, life sciences, education and research, so you'll have variety alongside a strong healthcare pipeline.

The role

You will own the mechanical design on the firm's healthcare projects from schematic design through construction administration. Recent work shows the scope: a 165,000 SF ambulatory center, a trauma care ICU and hospital core expansion, cardiac care and cath lab suites, interventional radiology and a pediatric OR.

Because architects, engineers and interior designers sit under one roof, you'll work alongside the design team from day one rather than as a downstream consultant. Expect some travel to hospital sites in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. There is a clear path to Senior Mechanical Engineer, with scope to work on mission critical and life science projects too.

Key responsibilities

Design HVAC systems for healthcare spaces: ORs, ICUs, isolation rooms, pharmacy (USP 797/800), imaging and labs

Run load calculations, energy analysis and equipment selections (chillers, boilers, AHUs, exhaust, humidification)

Lead pressurisation, air change and filtration strategies to meet infection-control requirements

Produce and check drawings, specifications and calculations from SD through CDs

Coordinate with in-house architects, structural, electrical and plumbing teams in Revit

Survey existing conditions in occupied hospitals and plan phased, live-environment works

Support construction administration: submittals, RFIs, site visits and punch lists

Attend client and design meetings with hospital facilities and infection-control teams

Guide and review the work of junior engineers and designers

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related)

5+ years of HVAC design at an MEP consulting or A/E firm

Healthcare project experience, ideally hospitals or ambulatory care in live environments

Working knowledge of FGI Guidelines, ASHRAE 170, NFPA 99/101, and the building and energy codes of NY, NJ and PA

Load calculation and modelling software: Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP or equivalent

Proficiency in Revit (MEP) and AutoCAD

Clear communicator, comfortable in front of hospital clients

EIT required; PE license or clear path to PE preferred

Nice to have

PE license in NY, NJ or PA (or eligible for comity)

LEED AP or WELL AP

Experience preparing submissions for NJ or PA Department of Health review, and Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA)

Work for major regional health systems in NY, NJ or PA

Exposure to mission critical, data center or life science / lab projects

Experience in an integrated architecture and engineering practice

What's on offer

Base salary $100k–$130k, depending on experience and licensure

Medical, dental and vision cover, 401(k) and PTO

PE exam and professional development support

Hybrid working

A defined route to Senior Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager
