Job description

Dominion Engineering, Inc. (Dominion), an Allied Power company is seeking an engineer with 0 to 10 years of experience and a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering (or theoretical and applied mechanics, or engineering physics with mechanical focus, or nuclear engineering), including those graduating by August 2026. The candidate will be responsible for performing engineering and technical tasks applying a range of engineering analyses, under general supervision, primarily in support of consulting projects within the nuclear power industry. This position is an opportunity to develop your expertise and grow your career as an engineering professional and technical leader within the nuclear industry.

A primary area of expertise at Dominion is providing solutions and research for aging management of nuclear power plant components and materials. This position will focus on supporting engineering evaluations and research to support the industry through modeling and simulation activities, providing engineering consulting support, and may provide support to other emergent Dominion projects. Additionally, this position will involve the performance and verification of mechanical and thermal analyses supporting the development and deployment of Dominion products within the industry. Analysis areas include stress analysis, fracture mechanics, finite element analysis, modeling/simulation of degrading materials, probabilistic modeling, thermal hydraulics, and numerical analysis of other physical systems and phenomena. In addition to performing various engineering analyses, the responsibilities of this position include drafting of calculations and reports documenting analyses, as well as working with other Dominion subject matter experts and engineers to produce various types of related assessment and guidance documents for industry clients.

This position requires strict adherence to nuclear industry principles, including but not limited to:

Essential Functions:

Performs mechanical engineering calculations

Prepares technical reports

Develops high quality communication exhibits (graphs, charts, presentations)

Strong analytical skills

Experience using engineering analysis software such as ANSYS Mechanical or LS-DYNA or similar

Thorough technical knowledge of finite element modeling practices

Analysis approaches including:

Elastic Stress Analysis

Plastic Stress Analysis

Heat Transfer

Fatigue

Clear written and verbal communication

Detail-oriented and self-directed

Critical thinking and problem solving

Competence in core mechanical engineering fundamentals:

Mechanics of materials

Stress analysis

Fracture mechanics

Thermodynamics

Heat transfer

Ability to develop expertise in one or more of the following:

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

Probabilistic fracture mechanics

Willing to travel up to 10-15% of the time (e.g., for Customer / industry meetings and occasional field support of products)

Ability to pass a drug screening test and background security investigation

Authorized to work in the United States

Physical Demands:

Work in an office environment

Overtime and non-standard work hours as required

Lift, carry, position, and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 25 lbs.)

Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment

Required Education, Experience, Certification and Licenses:

BS or MS Mechanical Engineering, Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Engineering Physics (with mechanical focus), or Nuclear Engineering
