Medical AssistantPosition Code: MA-XXXXDepartment: Physician Services Oracle Code: MA-XXXXReports to: Clinic Manager/Nursing Director Safety Sensitive: YesExempt Status: YesPosition Purpose:All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI's vision to be among the kindest, highest quality health systems in the country.Key Responsibilities:Responsible for patient care under the direct supervision of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner.Responsible for maintaining all applicable KHI Policies and Procedures.Escorts patients to exam room and prepares patient for exam including vital signs, history, and reason for seeking care.Cross trains in data entry, balancing of accounts, charges fees and collect payments due.Schedules/confirms appointments.Maintains and facilitates communication between patients, family and clinical staff.Reports as necessary to Public Health at direction of provider.Maintains work area including exam rooms, supplies, medication and immunizations.Performs CLIA waived lab tests and obtains specimens; performs proficiency testing and runs controls for waived tests; may perform venipuncture.Performs other duties as assigned.Qualifications:Education: High School diploma or Equivalent.Must also meet one of the following criteria:a. Attended an approved medical assistant training program, a copy of the diploma or transcripts are on file, by one of the following:i. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs; orii. The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schoolsb. Attended an unapproved training program and successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute and a copy of that certification is on file.c. Directly supervised by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours prior to February 2000. (Letter from physician, physician group, or physician assistant must be on file)d. Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States and a copy of that certificate is on file.e. Completed an unapproved medical assistant training program and was employed as a medical assistant after program completion, prior to February of 2000.Licensure: NoneCertification: BLS through the American Heart Association or American Red CrossThe following Departments/Clinics also require DPS Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card:8050 Resident Clinic6601 Joshua Tree Pediatrics6616 Urgent Care6600 Mountain Shadow Primary Care6605 Golden Valley Medical Center6504 Physician Services Float PoolSkills and Knowledge:Able to communicate effectively with others; manage multiple priorities and tasks, to maintain attention to detail.Able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocol.Knowledge of/able to implement direct care, newborn through geriatric.Knowledge of/able to use basic medical terminology.Preferences:Experience: One to two years' experience as a medical assistant in a clinical outpatient setting.Special Position Requirements:Exposure Categories:Category I: Expected duties have routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissuesOther potential hazard(s): possible exposure to chemical, biological and radioactive substances; possible exposure to hostile individuals.Work Requirements:Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors.Incumbent must be able to consistently reach and/or work above and below shoulder level; lift up to 50 pounds.Able to walk/be on feet 90% of day with frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, standing.Able to sit at desk 10% of day; communicate using telephone.ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:This job description applies to all KHI facilities and is representative of the essential job duties this position will perform.
