Job description

Medical AssistantVerifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking blood pressure, weight, temperature, and other vitals; and reporting patient history summary.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssisting healthcare providersMaintaining electronic health records (EHR) and documenting patient data in appropriate fieldsCollecting specimens for laboratory testing, administering medications and immunizations and conducting patient intake and exit interviewsUsing data and patient registries to outreach to patients in need of preventive care and follow-up for chronic conditionsAssisting with patient referrals, tracking and follow-upAs appropriate, taking patient phone calls and following up on patient requestsScheduling appointments, verifying insurance, checking patients in and out and assessing charges, including past due balances and collection of fees (e.g. co-payment, co-insurance, point-of-care incentive).Knowledge:General knowledge of quality improvement practices.Skills:Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.Proficient with medical office technology and equipment, including computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and phone systems, as well as MS Excel/Word/Outlook, Electronic Health Record systems and automated medical scheduling and billing programs.Excellent interpersonal skills in group and community settingsAbility to plan, schedule and coordinateEffective management of multiple duties and responsibilities in a clinical settingSound leadership and clinical judgmentExcellent communication skills in person, on the phone and in written communicationsFlexibility in a rapidly growing and changing work environmentStrong attention to detailExceptional customer service skillsAbility to maintain confidentiality of financial and clinical informationExcellent listenerDemonstrates initiativeRequired:High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)Satisfactory completion of Medical Assistant Certification ProgramPreferred:Experience working with racially and ethnically diverse populations, low-income populations and people experiencing homelessnessAt least one year of experience in a primary care or public health setting functioning at the full extent of her/his trainingExperience with Practice Management systems and EHRPrior work in performance or quality improvementPhlebotomy SkillsPhysical Requirements:Full range of motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye–hand coordinationStanding and walking frequently and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 poundsFrequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical settingSome travel within western North CarolinaWork Environment:Fast paced work environment.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.Disclaimer: The above duties and responsibilities are essential job functions, subject to reasonable accommodations.
