Unit Details: The unit serves a generally lower-acuity general medicine/internal medicine population, comparable to a regular MedSurg unit in a community hospital. Patients include those with cellulitis, abdominal pain, infections, surgical overflow, direct admissions, transplant workups, some behavioral patients, and inpatient rehab/SNF transition patients waiting for insurance authorization. The unit generally receives patients who do not require telemetry. RNs perform the majority of phlebotomy and IV starts; techs can perform lab draws and EKGs. RNs titrate drips including heparin and Lasix. Respiratory therapy is shared between floors. Patients may have home CPAPs, which RT sets up, and receive breathing treatments.
Shift & Scheduling: Night shifts are 7p-7a, and nurses must arrive 15 min early for shift change. Huddles start at 6:45; the earliest clock-in is 6:38. This unit does not have telemetry but requires telemetry competency for floating; it is the only unit without telemetry. NIHSS is not needed for this floor but is required for floating purposes. All other units have telemetry, and RNs must have experience with basic EKGs, know how to interpret strips, and perform cardiac drips for the floating requirement.
