Job description
Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)The major duties of the job include, but are not limited to:Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture and finger stick to collect blood specimens according to written protocols or as directed by the physician or other professional staff.Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions always while drawing blood.Enters all requests into the hospital computer system using multiple formats.Builds manifests for Send Out testing and gathers, aliquots, labels, and packages specimens for courier pickup.Performs all aspects of sample storage, packaging, and other requirements regarding the shipment of diagnostic specimens and infectious substances adhering to Federal DOT (Department of Transportation) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) Regulations.Functions as a resource person and troubleshooter for forward and clinic personnel in executing VISTA order entry and results options.Maintains computer files and manually printed order entry forms.Perform other related duties as assigned.DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) (formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)) must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment.This position is not part of the AFGE Bargaining Unit PositionNOTE: Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.
